What happens if you make an illegal move (like bringing the king to check) in a regular chess match and chess competition?

The game ends? Perhaps the game "breaks"

Usually, two minutes are added to your opponent's time.

I think you also have to make a legal move with the King since you touched it.

FoolMate2222

If you made an illegal move, you must take back and make a legal move

U can’t capture the king. If the king is trap but not in check then yes

I don't think so. I think you can make any legal move in that case.

I don't mean online chess like chess.com

They lose if they call the arbiter. Magnus lost a game once because his opponent made an illegal move.

I agree with BlueHen86. Article 4.4.3 from the FIDE Laws of Chess

With the piece that you touched. If there are no legal moves available for the piece that you touched then you are free to make any legal move.

Why would Magnus lose a game because his opponent made an illegal move?

I had a feeling that used to be the case but they recently changed the rules

I'm guessing that this was the referred game. Magnus initially was awarded a loss but was later given the win

Not sure, I think it varties based on the rules your playing by, in some competitions if you play an illegal and hit the clock, you instantly lose.

I think this is true. It may depend on the time control. In the OTB standard time control tournaments that I played in and directed you did not lose if you played an illegal move and hit the clock.

I suspect in faster time controls like bullet and blitz that may not be the case.

Stalemate ends the games, so if no one realized it was stalemate until after a player tried to make an illegal move, the game would just be a draw.

QueensGambitDude123

I was playing chess with my brother (not online), and we didn't realize that the king was in check (until after several moves) and it messes up the game.

I'm going to make sure to be careful.

I think that you're thinking that the king would result in check by the pawn after the move. That is not true since the pawn is going in the other direction.
