But that is just your opinion. Good for you. Bad for me.
IM Greg Shahade: "Slow Chess should die a fast death"!

Optimum time control? There is no optimum time control. The more you shorten it, the more you lose on quality.
I've been playing tournament chess for years. You see more and have more time to look things over during a 2h/40 + 1h/20 + 30 min KO game (7 hours total) then you have during a 2h KO game (4 hours total). You really FEEL the difference. It's a very big one.
I'm an engineer. There's always a trade-off between time and quality and there's always a point of diminishing returns. The trick is finding the sweet spot on that curve.
Two GMs can play a great four-hour game. That doesn't mean they play twice as well in an eight-hour game. Nor does it mean they only play half as well in a two-hour game.
If the GMs played 80% as well in a two-hour game, would that be acceptable? It's a judgment call.

Anyone have an opinion about Fide Online Arena? I'm considering signing it up for their rapid chess.
At this point FIDE Online Arena is fantastic. How else are you going to sit in your living room and play rated FIDE games? You can play all the way up to 45+10's on there that will count for your FIDE Rapid Rating. They've merged the OTB and online blitz, bullet, and rapid ratings. Standard is still only playable OTB...as it should be.

Thanks. I just signed up as a guest. Will give it a go. Then, maybe upgrade. Looks interesting.
I'm a senior citizen...and I can't sit in a chair more than an hour. Rapid is for me...not too fast...not too slow.

Very cool. Keep in mind though that you can't play rated Elo games unless you have a platinum account there. I think it's $58 a year.

how does the fide rating compare to chess.com rating? I mean the blitz rapid, lightning ratings.

Warbringer: Interesting. According to the Arean website:
FIDE titles for the lower rating band
In order to support the players' private online gaming and the active local chess communities, the top players of which have not reached the traditional Master level, FIDE announces the new Arena titles for the average amateur performance between 1100 and 2000 Elo points.
These titles can be achieved online by the members of FIDE Online Arena, and obtained by direct paypal payment without any application from the player's National Federation.
The titles of Arena Grand Master, Arena International Master, Arena FIDE master and Arena Candidate Master are the same for men and women, they are registered on the player's profile card on FIDE website, and are recognised to be used also for over the board tournament participation.

Fide is desperate for money.

(#141)....and there are any number of ways one can lose--he hits the clock but the clock doesn't register his move, he has a lapse of consciousness for a moment, he has a muscle spasm and is late moving his piece;
....or eating your lunchable or slapping a mosquito or finger-drumming.
In fact, I have lost in all three ways I cited. The latter two might be ones I notice more than others do, since I'm epileptic. But you're just showing your unwillingness to be serious when you add the ones you added.

Completely agree with the OP!I am playing chess intensively for a year and a half. I have played about rapid 2500 games and 0 slow chess game. I have played many rapid tournaments with great fun, but for the moment i will not play any slow chess. Why? Because I Have family and life and I won´t spend one entire weekend playing chess for 14 hours.
Then don't. But don't dictate that other people must also play fast.

His argument about online chess not being slow is irrelevant. People don't play slow chess online because of engine abuse paranoia and that's it. How many more people participated in your state chess tournament than in your state blitz tournament? Here it was around 200 more.
I *do* play slow chess online: I have three days per move. I almost never take three days for a move, but it's available.
On the other hand, I hardly ever play speed chess, which amounts to making the move that looks right at first glance instead of actually spending some time thinking about which move really is best.

I think that if the time controls were 1 hour for each players that would make chess more interesting and more of a spectator sport. Players would still have decent thinking time while audience will also know that it's gonna be 2 hours tops (and that is important). The sponsors will also be happy since the events can be on TV and there will be time for a few short commercials too. So, all of that will also bring more money in chess.
Did I also mention that chess itself will become a more fighting game? Players will have to take more risks, play a bit more aggressively since they're gonna be racing against the clock at the end if they don't. And, even when it comes to the race, that will also make a good spectator sport. So, overall, I think that my idea might be an optimal solution...
I gather you don't like positional chess? Playing for small advantages that will allow you win the ending? That's somehow bad chess and shouldn't be allowed?

The folks who wanna play classical will play classical, the folks who wanna play rapid will play rapid,I don't see why the need to eliminate classical chess
I just wish we could get titles by playing rapid and blitz.

Then by all means, play rapid. But don't eliminate longer games for people who want them.
