IM Greg Shahade: "Slow Chess should die a fast death"!

Like Trump, he's just trying to tap into the "dumbing down" of the population. I'm not implying that chess players are dumb. His key word is "fun". We have a entire generation that's just wants to have to "fun" in everything they do in life. These are the same people that call 911 when Facebook goes down.Embarassed

What's next? Blitz poker?

Actually, that's how many young pros get started.  Multi-tabling on 16 SNG tables (need a 17''+ monitor) online is not too rare among players who are about to go (or are) pro.

Very true. Players can also call the clock on someone if they're taking forever. Aside from really big tournaments or grinding cash game tables poker isn't something that normally takes 4-6 hours to play.

Comparing Poker to Chess is unfortunate IMO.Poker has a wide appeal,is very easy to understand and follow,is a game of chance and is played for money.Chess on the other hand is not popular,it is not easy to follow and understand top level games,it is not a game of chance,it is not played for money.

We need to quit dumbing things down.

That's actually pretty interesting. I suppose 30/5 time controls and things close to it have a place just like blitz chess.

When classical chess games are outlawed, only outlaws will have classical chess games...

@OP: I disagree with IM Shahade's opinion. His argument that we now live in a fast-paced society is merely a fanciful "what-if." Chess was not invented last week. It has a long, established history, with rich tradition supporting and leading to what Chess has become today.

Somehow, somewhere, another thread that had nothing to do with Donald Trump became about Donald Trump.

In any case, I find slow chess about 50 times more fun than other forms of chess. It's extremely satisfying to go through all the deep features of a position, step by step, and the tension often builds enormously. Obviously one must have the time for it, but given that, that is absolutely the kind of game I most want and enjoy to play.

(#12) I disagree but he is certainly entitled to his opinion.

And he's entitled to ours too !....Smile....

The very comment that chess is being dumbed by the desire to play chess at 30+5 time controls instead of the current 40/90 time control is just name calling.

As IM Shahade pointed out, chess isn't "dumbed down" by 30+5 time controls. Magnus Carlsen would still play at a higher level in rapid time controls than Alexander Alekhin at slower time controls.

Today's players are really that good!

One of the most beautiful games ever played was Ivanchuk-Yusupov, a rapid game.  The games played in the World Rapid Championships this year were incredible, both in terms of quality and creativity.

Here's the Ivanchuk-Yusupov game for those who haven't seen it:

@OP: Of course the world's best and many others could still play Chess very well at a faster pace. That does not rob slow Chess of its value!

Of course the games will be a lot sloppier. More cheap tricks, smoke and mirrors, chess is one of the few games that has a lot more grace than that, where a concept can actually win you a game.

If you catch a good two hour movie, the plot and action keep you riveted to the edge of your chair until the screen credits roll. If the movie is bad, you can't wait until it's over. Or you get up and leave. A good chess game lasts 5 hours and to those who have played games this long they know it's far more entertaining than a 2 hour blockbuster movie.

FIDE gives titles for slow chess not for fast chess. They wont, and shouldn't even consider changing this.

Case closed.

Short time controls cause garbage chess. I don't play on this site because a mid level player, like myself, can't get away from it. I'm no GM but I know of no GM to routinely open a game with a3 since Adolf Anderssen. A good number of players are intentionally ridiculous. I, myself, play suspect openings like the Latvian Gambit and Old Benoni just to make something happen. I would prefer not to but if I don't then there is no game to speak of.

Seems like everybody wants to play closed games these days. I find frequently at move 40 there are still 14 pawns on the board. You can't play 80 quality moves in 5 minutes. Whenever I see a guy open with a Knight or advancing a pawn one square, I flat out resign. There is no point. A good closed game can't be developed and resolved in short time control.

It really seems to me that Mr. Shahade is trying to generate controversy for his own benefit.

Escher: That's what I expected but when I went to his article I found Shahade made good arguments.

Much of Shahade's motivation is that professional chess is a real rat race -- two 5+ hour games a day leaves little time to prepare for one's next opponent much less relax, get a decent meal and enjoy the city.

Still, even when I was a kid I played in a lot of 30/30 Weekend Swisses and I didn't like playing so fast.
