Is it fair to say that material is even? Going by the points table?

Which side would you rather be? :)

Rybka gives this as an advantage to the pawn side from the off, but it always seems to lose to the side with the pieces. A common theme in Rybka seems to suggest that if the piece side can get a major piece (Queen/Rook) to the opponent's back rank, it's curtains. Is that back rank defensible?

Very interesting! This situation seems to be good for the pawns, there's so many of them! It would seem that once all of black's pawns are traded off, white will have a ton of pawns really threatening to queen.

Could you post a few games you played out on rybka maybe?

I've played this a few times on another site -- horde chess or something although slightly less pawns if I remember (it's been a few years).  It's surprisingly hard to win with the pawns.  Often the pieces side plays the rook pawns forward and through sacks forces files to open for the rooks.  If even one queen/rook infiltrates it's all over.

How many initial moves do the first rank pawns have? 1? 2? 3? hmmmm.....

These pawns rock. There no chance of survival for black since each pawn can be a potential queen.
