In general I was not inclined to visually assess my chess position and look at others plans until I was about 1500. I just learned good moves and exploited weaknesses. At the 1600 level at age 18 I remember playing a 2 day tournament and could remember 30 moves deep into the five games I played. I just accepted that I sat on the games so long that it was burned into my memory.
however, When I hit 1700 and started to study a tactics book I decided not to use a board and think about the move sequences 1-5 forced moves ahead. I noticed I could see things much better. Still if I look at a board and look away for good period of time I can tell you roughly the position and possible moves. Lather this goes away unless its a correspondence game.
My question is... What is your journey and tips for increasing your ability to see the board and calculate moves?
