I mostly just played a lot of games, and studied a lot of tactics.

Playing against a computer won't help much, because the rating difference is too high, and computers can't emulate class players play.

I dont think learning the mate with the 2 Bs is very important ( for beginners ) as this ending is as rare as the ending of B+N v  K . In fact , I have had B+N v K only once in over 35 years of tournament play and NEVER had B+B   v  K .

How many times have you had these endings in otb play ?

I dont think playing against computers is a good way for beginners to improve. The engines are far too strong and merciless and cannot explain anything at all. Its also very discouraging/depressing to be smashed game after game after game.....

Some players never play endgames, because of their openings, or because the just take a draw when the middlegame is over. I always play my games 100%.
