In A Real Life Game, If You Don't Hit The Clock To Stop Your Time From Running, What Happens?

Hello guys!

So, if you are in a serious chess game and you are TOO into it, what happens if you forget to hit your clock? Will you run out of time? Will you get excluded from the tournament? Will your opponent not be able to hit their clock too?

Please answer the questions...they keep me up at night talking to my parents. Lol

They potentially could, if their opponent just waits them out, but I've only seen something like that a couple of times.

If your opponent wait until your time runs out, you lose on time.
