In Defense of Chess in School

I think it's fine when people in school play chess when it's free time or when they have finished their work but playing chess when they should be doing work or listening in class isn't advisable.

thatcathehe

Why are teachers trying to make themselves enemy No.1

Say that it's stimulating your mind more than school, and that if the teacher wants your attention, they need to earn it. (DISCLAIMER: In this hypothetical, the student has really good grades and the teacher can't just say that he absolutely needs to pay attention)

And furthermore, this was me kinda meming, teachers work long hours with obnoxious kids (you might not be, but some are, and overall a group of rowdy kids, even if they aren't disrespectful, are annoying) and they don't get paid enough for it. So think twice, thrice, and 4,5,6 etc. times before pulling out something like what I said lol

I was getting a bit worried for a second there because I was thinking that what you said before might just be the dumbest thing I have ever heard lmao

Pay attention in class… play chess at recess.

As a kid I was on my high school chess team. Back then I was a much better player than nowadays. Those practice sessions and matches were all extra-curricular activity of course, so it didn't take any time away from our education. I remember we had fun on road trips when we played other high schools.

Maybe if you're in elementary, but middle schools and high schools don't get that luxury. Our only break is lunch basically. What TheFastTurtle27 is saying is that if we're done with our work and have decently high grades (A's / high B's AND no missing assignments) then we should be allowed to stimulate our brain in chess, considering we have nothing else to do.

We had study periods when I was in high school. We were allowed to play chess as long as we kept it quiet.

When is chess noisy?🤣

They’re referring to the conversations that might develop from the socializing. Chess can be noisy if players are slamming their pieces down on a wooden board, maybe out of anger.

Chess is obviously a better use of our time than those stupid equations on the blackboard!
