In OTB, Do You Stare Your Opponent Down

Sort:
Caesar49bc

I play the board.  If my opponent spent the whole time staring at me, I doubt I'd notice much.

At his level yes.  At ours?  No...

How about you?

According to the laws of chess, your game could have been awarded to your opponent. The procedure would be to inform the captains of your behaviour or if there was an arbiter present, inform him or her. In cases where there are no arbiters, the captains jointly fulfill that function. I think that if your team captain refused to co-operate, then s/he would be seen to be supporting abusive behaviour. The key is that you were doing something deliberately to make your opponent feel uncomfortable, outside the normal moves/procedures of chess, your opponent asked you to stop, which is his right under the laws of chess and you refused. That is really bad news. Most adults expect kids to try it sometimes and often they don't complain but if it's another kid you're doing it to, that could be seen as threatening behaviour.

I'm in USCF. My TD wouldn't care for such a stupid complaint.>>

Then your TD doesn't know the rules of chess. But since you live in the USA, wouldn't it be OK for your opponent just to have shot you? Sounds like your TD would think that's fine too. Anyway, it isn't up to the T.D. in the first instance. It's up to an arbiter.

Well, complaining about someone staring at you was a joke, a lot like this forum. Toomany people took it seriously.

Fair enough. The trouble is that most people who have been around for a bit in chess circles have come up against obnoxious kids with behavioural problems. So all I was doing was answering as if your comments were true, because it is a subject that could be discussed and in particular, any claim that it's ok to resort to gamesmanship needs to be challenged, because gamesmanship is a sort of low-level cheating. That is, maybe it's not like hiding a chess engine in the toilet cistern but it's still cheating because it's aimed at getting an unfair advantage, so it doesn't matter whether you were joking or not and thankyou for raising this subject.

I agree, in retrospection, addressing sportsmanship and etiquette is important because it CAN give people an unfair advantage.

The simplest solution is to immediately contact the tournament director. The OP and others like him (above) will be removed short with. Unfortunately, there are a few miserable souls to whom good sportsmanship does not exist. They revel in creating a negative atmosphere. Chess is not about sharing, but rather being rude and obnoxious. These individuals are easily dealt with without too much fuss.

Yes, we've been through this. But actually, it's an arbiter who should be involved.

Well, actually, the USCF doesn't have arbiters. The tournament director (TD) runs the tournament and performs the same duties as an arbiter.

What if those kids are your children?
