In what % of your games do you castle on the queen side?

I'm asking this because I am playing a game online and about to castle on the queen side. And it occurred to me that I have rarely done this!

What about you? (Not the grandmasters, but you.)

For me the king side is so much faster. And I feel more secure there.

I only castle on the queen-side if I have to.

There are several openings that I play where it is common to castle queen side. I would say it probably goes somewhere between 10% and 20%.

Here are two recent games where I castled queen side:

Games with opposite side castling tend to be very sharp and aggressive. I really enjoy them. I can recall at least one instance where I castled as Black in a Sicilian Scheveningen.

I castle queenside too often. It can get dangerous over there.

When I'm white and face the sicilian,,,always castle queen side. well, except when there's sicilian, Kan variation.

I used to play Center Game as White so I was castling queenside 90% of the time back then...and it taught me some amusing lessons about what it means to have an open diagonal to the king and a few other nuances.  What I'd be really curious about is how often does anyone castle queenside as Black?  I almost never see it, though I did it a few days back and it felt funny and foreign.

I agree. It does feel very odd. A few lines I play in the Sicilian do this, as I mentioned before, but White rarely plays them. I have only ever actually played it once. I believe a game on FICS. But, you cannot play the Scheveningen if you are affraid of leaving your king in the center or having to castle queen side w/ you queen side pawns already advanced. I have also seen a few lines in the Pirc. which I do not play as Black, where Black castles queen side after white has done the same to as to avoid a king-side pawn storm.

Well, I am playing black in this game. And on the king side my bishop can't get out, and all is clear for me to castle on the queen side. It feels so awkward, but I believe in the interest of time it is best. Not sure. My opponant may come down hard on me on the queen side.

Make sure you publish it when you are done!

I have castled queenside in about 17% of my games, about twice as often as white than as black.  I guess I feel freer to take some liberties when I have the first move.  I agree that opposite side castling definitely tends to sharpen the play.  Kotov has an interesting discussion on how to conduct an attack when the two players have castled on opposite sides in The Art of the Middlegame.

I castle queenside quite often against the sicillian and sometimes when i play the scotch. But otherwise only if my kigside pawn structure is weak.

Castling queenside as black also happens regularly in the Caro-Kann and the Scandinavian, and in some lines of the 2.c3 Sicilian.

One of my favourite games as black had whtie start with a Danish gambit and he built up a HUGE attack on my kingside...

at which point I castled queenside and he had nothing.
