increased Queen powers: just thinking outloud

Wouldn't it be so cool if the Queen also had the ability to move like the Knight, as well as being able to move like the rook or bishop!!!  But perhaps its best to just keep things as they are.....I'm basically "old school"   Just thinking outloud here...........  I believe at one time the Queen could just move one space at a time.....imagine if the king could move like the present day Queen can!!!  The King would then be more of an attack piece, yet still subjuct to check....wow i've thrown out alot here today....gotta sit down, and rest a spell....thanks for dropping by........would you be my friend????

Easy, big fella. Take your meds.

if the king move like a queen, then it would be really really hard to checkmate. That, added onto queens moving like knights and sometimes moving like kings, would make chess incredibly complicated. Chess itself is actually a very simple logic game, only made complicated by experts who dissect the game beyond the core, and making it any more complicated would result in an explosion of surplus complexity and render the classical game illogical and almost as stupid as modern board games.

I think all the pieces should be queens... Wink

Plus, then if the queen could move like a knight as well as a rook and bishop, then it is possible to checkmate with just the queen

It also makes the knight much less unique, and you would end up with a far less elegant game, which relies more on brute force than the deeper, positional considerations we get in modern chess.

I better take some pretentious pills :P

I don't agree really with the game becoming illogical.  Chess used to be even simpler than it is today.  And Japanese Chess/Shogi is even more complicated than modern chess, but it's been played as a game of strategy for a long time.  I would hesitate to assume that chess is already some perfect balance for competitive logic.

Chess is the greatest board game gone sport of all time.

A queen that can also move as a knight is also often called an amazon, empress, or terror in chess variants.

There's also a variant piece called the king battler, which can move as a queen. However, if it is in check, it can only move as a queen to make a capture.
