1200 is the starting elo rating, I don't know why it's specifically that number but it's high enough that you don't go below 0
No, the OP is correct. Some people seem to have been given the choice of what rating they wanted to start at. It's been that way for a long time. I seem to remember that it has something to do with what device you were using when you registered your account. Absolutely ridiculous I know, but that is my recollection.

On the mobile app, when you sign up it asks you what your skill level is. Your initial rating depends on your answer. I don't see what it matters, your rating will quickly adjust to whatever strength you are.
I wanted to start with a rating of 4, but they wouldnt let me...
How do we choose initial rating 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2200 and so on ...?
