Intellectual differences in Blitz and Standard chess.

I often wonder about the differences in thinking patterns between Standard and Blitz chess. For me, I just go for instant materials during blitz chess and never formulate a plan because I often cannot.

But my last blitz game (in some other chess website) against an opponent of similar standard rating as me, made me question what makes a player good or bad in blitz chess. Obviously, I got owned and it was perhaps one of the biggest ownages I had in chess since I began the game. The opponent told me that his game quality didnt vary in blitz or standard. Therefore, he was excellent at blitz chess FROM THE START.

So, what are the intellectual qualties of a good blitz player. Quick thinking is obviously one of them but what about good memory, good basic theory or stuff like that. I have been playing chess dedicatingly for 9 months now so I should have a good flow, rythmn but I often have to think a lot while playing. Even against amateurs, I cant finish them off as smoothly and menangcingly as I often want to.

So, 2 things- What are the mental qualities of a good blitz chess and at what skill/rating does playing chess happen quite effortlessly (or with minimal thinking) against lower rated players (1200<).

well it should really be good brain skills and seeing opportunities and mistakes ur opponent makes. usually in blitz many make mistakes so u should try to break through then. so it is really keeping ur eye i guess. on time as well as the opponents pieces
