I envy you. I haven't played an OTB tournament yet.
Internet Chess is Ruined for Me!
I've always said that 2D chess was a lot different-
I still like to use a board for at least one of my online games (not Live Chess-too fast...but I did try!)
Yes and no. The OTB experience is awesome. I've never had a tournament I didn't love being at. I used to be competitive in some sports, and I have to say even that didn't compare to chess for me. But it doesn't RUIN online chess for me, especially because I don't get the pleasure of finding many big tournaments these days.

True. I think it might be because the whole experience is still very new to me. This wasn't a large tournament by any means, it's held weekly.
I did fairly well considering there were some strong players there. I'm certaintly motivated to improve my play though.
Enjoy both! I have to say though, OTB, when you spy a combination...and your heart rate skyrockets and you have to try to stay calm and figure it all out...that is a rush. I don't get that from the internet. But, there is so much here on the internet to love. I wish I lived in an area where I could enjoy both. I am glad you had a great experience.
magnum; I am happy that you enjoyed playing OTB, I do as well!
If it's your intention to continue to play OTB and get better at it then you would be insane to stop playing online!!! Chess.com has been a major contributing factor to my OTB play improving dramatically and such a resource would be very unwise to ignore.
Whatever you do, have fun!

I'm the opposite. I don't mind playing OTB with a friend, or playing some casual games at the club, but I can't stand OTB tournaments. I get too attached to my games, and have a harder time just letting it go and moving on when I lose. I much prefer playing online.
i havent played otb tournemanet in over 12 years and man do i miss them. skittles games (casual games) are ok but lack the excitement of a tournament. i live in a chess impoverished area so i have to get my kicks through the net. however if i lived around tournaments or a chess club i would still continue to play online just for the sheer volume of games you can play and for the information exchange.
I'm the exact opposite of magnum_opus. I have played in about a dozen OTB tournaments and countless OTB games with friends. But I have found first postal chess, and now slow-play internet chess (just a better way of doing postal chess) far more enjoyable. So much is missed in OTB games! To me, it's not real chess, it's just a little contest to see who can make the fewest blunders. Internet chess with plenty of time for analysis is real chess! I can see the subtleties and beauty of the game. The only drawback is that whatever life I would otherwise have is replaced by many hours of analysis. That's why at Chess.com I'm only playing some games with my grandson and a few others and will not join a tournament. And now I'm almost contradicting myself and saying that OTB chess is better. Because internet chess is too good. It can become an addiction.
After playing in my first chess tournament today ( and my first OTB game as well ), I'm sorry to say that internet chess just isn't much fun anymore.
i had a great time.. The whole experience was awesome, especially playing chess in front of a lot of people in New York City.. I even played two people who are members here.
Has anyone else felt the same?
