Internet Conventions Regarding Cheating

For many years Chess has been played on material boards using material pieces. Now Chess can be played over the internet using flat screen boards and symbolic pieces. Has a convention evolved that considers transferring screen based moves to a material board with material pieces for traditional viewing to be Cheating?

Thank you DavidJSmith2 for thinking this through and making a helpful reply. I do have a couple of follow up questions. 1) Would a better title be Internet Conventions Regarding What Is Considered Cheating? 2) I can imagine that opinions may vary Regarding what is Cheating, and what is not, when playing chess across the internet. What I really hope to learn is whether this is a settled question, or an open question. If it's settled, i don't want to challenge it, or violate it!! I guess I am wondering if this site has a position on the acceptability of transferring screen moves to a wooden board with wooden pieces, for viewing only, in any game (regardless of live or with 3 day limit per move time rules). I would expect that any assistance from a friend or a computer analyst would definitely be Cheating.

As far as I know there are no direct prohibitions against using a physical board in Live games and making the moves on the board on the screen.

What would be against the rules would be trying out variations on your physical board. You would have to play touch-move and would have to move the same piece on the computer, even if you noticed it was a blunder before making the move on screen.

What that means is that the moves are done by your personal honor. There are a number of topics about the question and as far as I'm aware, no one on staff has posted an official statement one way or another.

it seems to me that the policy is clear

you can use a wood board/peices and play the game on it, transferring moves between that and the online game as shown.

I do that often but only with longer time controls (as the delay could matter in shorter games).

you are not allowed to use this fact to perform analysis in a live game.

simple.

BTW, I would mention that I think playing a chess game here with a physical board makes games here just a little more instructive for OTB purposes.   I am sure its a slight difference (chess is chess).... but if your purpose is to get as good OTB as possible, you ought to try to be instructive as possible with your whole program.

another slightly additional improvement IMHO, is by physically writing down the moves you play.  yes I know the website does this for you.   but I think its a similar issue.
