thanks but i was hoping to see data and sources on the chess-iq correlation instead.

Not sure how correlated it is, but obviously it is a bit. Would you rather play someone with a 60 IQ or 140? Magnus Carlsen as a kid had a phenominal memory for world capitals. Memory as I understand is a big part of IQ.

So it may play a small part in the success of women. Most likely IMO the main reason is simply interest.

IQ is not something that is commonly discussed among players (or more likely I just happen to fall within the dumb crowd).  However I've played people very successful in their careers but totally lost when it comes to chess.  Also many of the good players didn't seem to have a balanced life.  So my limited personal experience shows little correlation.  However that is probably not a good enough sample space.

I'm still hoping Milo supporters will enlighten us but so far it's been all sugar and no health like Nestle's Milo.

These are good points but I think what I said is still hard to refute. Someone with a 60 IQ likely can't read or write so obviously can't play chess very well. There's numerous examples of top players having extraordinary abilities which would be linked at least slightly to IQ (Morphy remembering whole operas for example).

Seems to me that you're right still. Those with a less balanced life are more likely to work hard at a board game to get good. However from what I understand about IQ (I may be wrong about this though), within the freakishly high range (not just the high range who are actually usually more successful overall with health etc. than those with freakishly high IQs) you're more likely to find the unbalanced characters who may do very well at chess. Who are more likely to make up the top top players.

True, a minimum IQ would be required unless in the case of an idiot savant.  I have also seen a few good students who.make it to expert or evnn fm and quit to focus on careers as well.

IQ is just highly correlated to the environment someones grows up during childhood.

The idea of measuring brain power as if it was a computer device is based on fantasy; being good at any intellectual skill demands a tremendous amount of work or dedication to the point you cannot really say it was truly innate.

Oh btw is this guy Milo has any knowledge about chess at all? Or it is just "oh look men do 1447 multiplications i  their head and women only 1200 and omg chess is a lot of calculations" or something?

This is so true and it took me most of my life to realize this. Anytime you see someone really good at anything (including chess for sure) and look closely, you realize they spent thousands—or sometimes tens of thousands—of hours doing it to get there.

Stats are all about numbers and allow easier generalization and therefore progress at the cost of anomalies that don't fall within the curve.  Can't really do without it though imho.

As for Milo, I don't know.  Seems to be the flavor of the times.

Milo fans, where are you all?

True. But it's also not contraversial that someone without talent isn't going to make world champion. (Not agreeing with Milo btw)

True. I'm just idly speculating.

Well it's also a tremendous predictor of success in many ways.

Maybe women have an earlier dropout -age than men. Women physically mature a year or wo earlier, and this prosess is a crisis for chess and sports.  A lot men quit competing at the age of ca 14- 17.

To be good at chess competing a year longer when teenager makes a huge difference. It also makes it more fun to make comeback.

About intelligence. My lady was tested at 180 as a teenager. She is a lot smarter than me, and does not play chess.

Maybe that in itself is sufficient proof of her intelligence ;-)

More and more are losing their way and stumbling into this thread

There have been eight year old kids who, playing blindfolded, could wipe the floor with a dozen club players in the time it takes the imbecile to utter the moronic words, "chess isn't innate".

I realize we're living in a culture of outrage - a classically liberal society indoctrinated with brain-dead individualist mantras. Sorry to bust your bubble, snowflakes, but equality is a social construct.

There really are stupid people who were born stupid and will remain stupid. The demographics are not equal. The sexes are not equal. Your destiny/ultimate fate is not created by you. There is no such thing as inalienable rights that exist outside strength of arm. You are a biological machine, hardcoded, and in control of jack squat. No amount of joining hands at the next social democratic circle-jerk, and no amount of singing of kumbaya, is going to change this.

Avatar of president_max

But we really do not know what happens when we sing kumbaya repeatedly as the count approaches infinity.

You are most welcome, tuna lover.  And you are very right - hair and eyes are the reflection of the soul (if ever present)
