is 1400 a good rating?

Remember, emu's rating probably gets a 200-300 point boost (thanks to the tank).

What if his opponents include members of the tank crew?

Emu is smarter than us, he'll go and pick your eyes out thus forcing you to play blindfold!

Yeah, I used to work there.

Even our cat had his own tank.

That looks (from a blurred distance) like John Mcafree next to the tank.

It is, in fact, an Emu. That's me in the Equipment Bay.

I have dozens of cute cat pictures on file, just waiting for suitable opportunities to deploy them.

Cats make great hippies.

One pair of sandals will do for two of them; and "Make meow not fffffft!" is a great slogan.

1400 seemed like a decent enough rating to me in 1995, but I really thought I was a little better and so was not content to stay there. Now, it seems a good rating for the elementary school children that I coach.

The problem with lower rated players, sub 1400 USCF, is that they might play the best move or combination on the board.  It can be frustrating if your rated 300 or 400 points higher.

Years and years ago, I was rated about 1350, and drew a guy rated 1800 like that. The 1800 wasn't to pleased about it.  That was in a USCF tournament in the early 1990's.

That is, the lower rated player might play some off the wall move that the higher rated player never considered... then suddenly the higher rated player is scratching their head trying to figure out it was a blunder, or the best move possible on the board.

Yeah, I've drawn or lost to players rated hundreds of points below me, and also had occasional "giant killer" moments... my draw with Tal in a simul, for instance.

All I want is to get to 1600 rapid on here then I will relax & take part in normal life again

Hahahaha.

Every time I dip below 1900, I go into a frenzy that will end when I get back to 1950. It often takes weeks as I fall to 1850...1800...horror of horrors...1795...

Stated simply, if you are proud of your rating then consider it a “good rating.” Good for you is different than what is good for Mickey Mouse which is different than what is good for Magnus Carlsen. For a happier experience with chess, try not to compare your rating with others but use it instead to track your progress and personal achievements. (Crackle crunch)

1400 seemed like a decent enough rating to me in 1995, also. i knew i was better, but was content to remain there as i did not care to spend any time studying the game.

You know, this all caught my attention concerning the "good" or "bad" of a 1400 player in Blitz on chess.com.    It's one of those things where the worst 1600 player on a "bad" day can easily lose to a good decent 1200 player on his best day.   Know what I mean?    But all that said, it really comes down to playing a LOT of consistent chess and playing much more that just 10min BLITZ chess day after day, after day.    Typically, most tournaments one can enter are NOT Blitz chess, and there are just so many players who are so used to moving very fast...bang, bang, bang!!   And when they have to slow down for a game that is 30moves in 60min or something like that, they freak out.   Blitz chess is a fairly new option when it comes to the overall realm of chess.   I remember when Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky and would just walk away from the game for minutes at a time when his clock was running.   Crazy, right?    Psychological warfare.    The beauty of chess sometimes is that is a battle of egos, and sometimes that doesn't always turn out to portray a thing of beauty.   There's a LOT of emotion involved in the game of chess.   All in all, I think it's a beautiful game, the best, most genius game ever invented, and it always works best when we treat both the game and our opponents with respect, and walk away knowing that no matter whether we win or lose, leaving the table as a true lady or gentleman is how you're remembered best sometimes.   Enough said I guess, went on a bit of a stroll there.    Enjoy the game....live long and prosper.
