Is anyone here because they stink at chess?

I have only one or two clues about what most of the threads are talking about, and I've been playing chess for over a decade! Whenever you don't understand a thread here, request pictures

I might take you up on that, thanks. For the longest time I was just playing pieces randomly because I had no clue how to visualize all the possible piece movements in my head, but I'm slowly learning how to properly look ahead a few moves. I keep getting blindsided by pieces I forget to account for in my mental calculations, though. Chess is like a 5x5x5 Rubik's cube to me, there's a ton of interlinked logic in how the pieces dance that's hard to follow. My tactics trainer level is around 600 if that's any indication, heh.

You can divide chess progress into "study" and "playing games" The newer you are, the more should be put into the playing category. The lessons in chessmaster are good, but if you're as new as you say you are it will be even more important to play often.
Just to get used to things you mention like common structures, visualizing pieces, and that sort of thing.
I have no clue what most of the terminology means, though I've at least waded through the first set of lessons in Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition. So pardon me if I have no clue what most of the threads are talking about. ;) I'm hoping the Tactics Trainer will give me a better feel for the structure of the game at least. My best friend has been bugging me to get better at chess for 20 years because he has delusions that I have the potential to one day beat him, unlike the rest of his friends.
