Is blitz Chess Frowned upon?

I have been playing alot of 5,3 or sometime 1 minute games, and from what i've noticed it is considered a bad thing, is this true?

Arctor

I certainly frown upon it Laughing

kylewmurray

haha why?

Arctor

Because the clock plays too much of a part in blitz. Bullet is just completely ridiculous

TheOldReb

Blitz isnt the way to improve your classic/slow/real chess game and in fact is often counter-productive.

I enjoy speed chess, i like fast paced thinking. I agree that the clock does pay a big part in the game but that is the point, thats just my opinion

I don't see the problem with bullet, as long as you don't come out of it with a good rating and think that means your a good chess player. They should be considered chess variants.

I've stopped playing blitz and never even played bullet games. In my opinion bullet isn't even chess, it is just a game that uses chess pieces and and the game is who has the fastest fingers without getting check mated. I have come to view that blitz teaches bad habits, as bad moves and openings aren't nearly punished as often as they should be. This can lead to one thinking a certain opening or strategy is good when in fact it isn't. It also seems to have hindered my ability to concentrate for longer periods of time, calculate deeply and accurately, and to form the best plans I can. So I'm taking myself away from blitz at least for a few months and see if I notice an improvement in those areas or not. I suspect I will.

Thats my personal experience and opinion on blitz/bullet chess. :)

I totally agree, although I do play bullet chess, but not blitz, i find 5 minute games like the 400m in Athletics, too long to sprint and too short to jog. At my level (1050-1100) you can simply move pieces randomly and hope to win, A while ago, I told myself if I improved my 30 min game it would improve my 1 min game aswell, I stopped playing bullet for a month or so and my rating was a hundred higher within a fortnight.

It is frowned upon in a similar way as correspondence chess is frowned upon by those cool otb players wanting to feel superior.

heinzie

Oh no, your ratings are under 1200. Rating bullies coming in in 3...2...

edit: oh never mind, RoseQueen has already been banned.

kylewmurray

I might keep away from it until i improve my game then go back, thanks for the help!

Lol, that was funny. :)

Blitz in moderation can be helpful: It teaches you to stay calmer in time pressure, and it also gives you a crash course in openings and patterns that might otherwise take you much longer to familiarize yourself with.

I feel like the masters have it right. Here's what blitz is for:OPENINGS You can learn openings quickly through speedy trial and error. It also helps your tactics in my opinion.

Yea I think whenever a live game of time control five minutes or less is played a Frown is supposed to appear next to each player's clock.  But I've noticed it hasn't been appearing with complete regularity lately.

I believe there is a site redesign going on...maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't think blitz or bullet affects aspects of my 'real' chess game, but I'm already a fairly experienced player.

When you play fast games, it's like a habit, after I played blitz and bullet for a while, I would never think about chess moves deeply (It's tough to just slow down and think about chess moves deeply after blits).

I think blitz is an excellent tool in chess.. as mentioned above, one of its best uses is trial and error in openings.  It also helps develop tactics; you can see dozens, if not hundreds, of games played featuring classic attacking schemes and combinations.  It also helps with seeing short combinations quickly, instead of puzzling them over at the board.  Blitz chess is no substitute for practice in OTB, slower games, but it can be an invaluable tool.

If you are planning on playing long tournament games; then playing to much blitz might inhibit your performance.  It may be more important for a while, to spend your time on developing your tactical and calculation skills.  On the other hand, some tournaments use blitz as tie breakers. Blitz also improves one's quick thinking which may come in handy when in time trouble.  Blitz is also a good way to check out new openings and experiment a little.  Despite blitz being frowned upon by some purist it is a lot of fun for others.  The best chess player still usually wins.  It does require developing a set of different skills but is no less demanding than regular chess.  If you like it play it!  Many great players, like Bobby, played blitz for hours on end.
