Every chess fan or fanatic in the world have at least heard or read something about Norway's Magnus Carlsen. The 17 year old phenomenun really is taking chess in to higher heights with his exploits. he had won top level tournaments and able to hold and even surpass the world's elite including Anand, Topalov and others.

i am only a chess fan wih limited knowledge but in my opinion he has what it takes to really conquer chess and dominate it if he continous to improve and develop his game.

Even his opponent acknowledge it and they have high regards to him.

The ultimate realization of his conquest is when he will crown himself as world champ.

is that coming soon or still years to come.

Will Anand, topalov, kramnik and other elite chess players allow it or they have still enough left in their arsenal to hold the 'kid'.

his emerging popularity plus he very good looks will really help ascend the popularity of chess.

he can easily be the cover boy of the game.

I couldn't agree more with you, Carlsen is a special player. I think there is no doubt that he will dominate the World's chess elite. He really is great player, already, and things can only get better...

Those in the Elite GM group all hold Carlsen in high regard, and that's enough for me. His games are exciting to me. He plays a nice style that doesn't discriminate between methodical endgame play or middlegame smashing sacrifices, a very well rounded player with top notch technique. From what I've read in snippets of the biographical book, he has tremendous natural mental gifts (near perfect recall memory) as well as an insatiable love for chess. I forsee him taking the worlds crown within 7 years, and not being quick to relinquish it. I think we will see a 15 year reign with this one!

Yeah, Carlsen rocks!

He indeed is a very likeable person, and a great player with an exceptional talent, too.

But I see at least 10 other players with no lesser talent and future:

The 'old' Anand, Kramnik, Ivantchuk, Gelfand, Leko,

the 'young wild' Aronian, Morosevich, Grishuk,

the 'shooting stars' Nepomniashchi, Alekseiev, and many others, from the former Soviet Union, China, and India.

And every year there is another shooting star  .

That's the difference to the situation 30 years ago, when we didn't have computers. Today, computers help to dramatically decrease the time a chess talent needs to become a 'universal player'.

Will Carlsen get the title? Let's see, there are many other strong candidates. 10-15 years reign? Most probably not! Great looks ? Well, as I said, he is a nice boy, but he is not 'great looking'.

haha yeah, that's what I thought, kind of "at least he's not good looking too."  Similar to how many people felt 10 years ago with david beckham, "so he's extremely talented at football, but on the other hand, he has a kinda weird voice."  Cool

There are so many good players around these days- it would be tough for Carlsen to retain a world championship title for a whole decade.

I think he can do it.  He is more well-rounded than the others before him.  I still think he can get better.  If he needs to win, he has the repertoire that can give him a dynamic game, while if he needs a draw, he has exceptional positonal skills.

shuttlechess92

carlsen just needs to improve his accelerated dragon - then he will be unstoppable.

mandelshtam

why is he better than the others (Aronian, Leko, Kramnik, Anand, ...) I cannot see that.

17 years old and already the best on the planet, yes Carlsen's play is amazing, or maybe misterious, time after time he gets an apparent inferior position and he almost always not only survives but wins! He seems to play without any difficulty at all, I guess his extraordinary natural concentration helps him a lot.
