It's a game, a really tricky game.
Is Chess a game or a sport?

Chess is officially classified as a Mind Sport by the International Olympic Commitee.
http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/recognized/index_uk.asp

depends what definition you use, for exapmle if you use this one
"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively." - wiki then yes
If you use this one
"an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition" then not so much

Yea well, I know better than they do.

chess it not a sport. but it is in a level of its own as a game
I agree not many games simulate the cut and thrust strategies of war.And strategy has everyday applications. And I think it was more than a game to Bobby Fischer and others.
Chess is definitely a sporting game. Very similar to football. The pieces are like the players, and we being the controllers are like the owners of the NFL. We move each piece and sacrifice some/others at whatever price or cost to win the game. Therefore, it is most assuredly a very strategic sport!!!!!

it is a grait game... bat that dos not meen it is a sport... sport is a fisical thine... the fact thet we all love chess makes no diferent..

i think it is a game.
i think it is a sport, 2 much concentration 4 game.
yeh.. if i concentrat on somthin enagh then it's defenetly a sport...

Are you kidding me? This is absolutely ridiculous. There is no possible way t's a sport. The owners of NFL franchises don't play, they take care of the business aspect. Last I checked, taking care of a player's salary wasn't physical. Neither is chess.

Chess is not a sport. But chess is more than a game in my opinion. Chess is an art of the mind. I'm not even sure how one could make the argument that it is a sport. Unless they get all technical and say pushing the pieces and tapping the clock is physical activity. But that is taking it a bit too seriously.

There isn't even room for discussion here. The answer is clearly defined. Here is the definition of the word 'game':
a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.
Sounds a lot like chess, doesn't it? Heres the definition for 'sport':
an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
And just in case you decide to argue that chess IS an 'athletic' activity:
involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina.
So there you have it. Chess is a game. Solved! I'd like a cookie, please.

baseballs a game and a sport so is football(american and european) it only matters if its a competition or a friendly game 2 world champs play anything its a sport 2 friends and its a game
"An activity involving physical exertion and skill, esp. (particularly in modern use) one regulated by set rules or customs in which an individual or team competes against another or others." -Oxford English dictionary
Lots of definitions of sport but this is the most modern from the looks of it ;). OED also has the nice feature of giving the context of a word's origination (in otherwords a great indication of its original purpose and the purpose it has come to have).
Still though forget the modern emphasis on physical extertion. I can definitly see chess as a sport.
A sport - well, a mind sport. It includes physical activity in the mind (and yes, I know I am denying the use of the word 'physical' but oh well!
