Is Chess a "Nerd" game anymore?

It is a nerdy game, however, you can be cool and a nerd at the same time.

Like it's possible to be a 120kg bodybuilder who looks badass, drives a sports car, has good social skills and enjoys chess.

Not all nerds look/act the same way.

You guys know Schwarzenegger is a huge chess fan right?

Doesn't mean everyone that plays it is nerdy, but it certainly does attract nerdy people more so than the average joe.

That's a total BS argument. People used to think video games were "nerdy" too, but now almost everyone plays them. The only anti-social aspect of chess is that players are not allowed to talk during games, but that's hardly enough to call it an activity for nerds.

That makes no sense. Just because a lot of people play video games doesn't mean certain video games aren't nerdy.

Like I said look at the top chess players during social interactions. They're almost all literally nerds.

Video games were nerdy until sports games and Call of Duty. If you prefer Dragon Age or do speed runs of Mario, you’re a nerd.
NilsIngemar

Really?

Nah, video games were cool. Perhaps they took a nose dive in popularity until the blood and guys games arrived.

Chess has never been cool.

Miniongolf

Top players are a different story. Your average joe can still pick up chess and make a chess.com account because why not.

Nonsense. Watch how Fabiano Caruana effortlessly radiates cool assurance during this interview with the beautiful Tania Sachdev.

Oh yeah. I see it. I recognize that hand-wringing.

Chess is still mostly a nerdy game. I enjoy it, but usually won't bring it up in conversation.

Popularity certainly has risen due to things like The Queen's Gambit, but I imagine quite a lot Covid players will lose interest when lockdown ends.

You should make it a challenge to drop one chess term into a conversation each day.

Is Chess a "Handsome Nerd" game anymore?

Pin on Eye candy.

thanks for the compliment

Is everyone in this conversation a chess player?  We're nerds.  Some of you may be in denial, because of the negative connation around the word.  It is derogatory usually..  I'm proud to be a nerd.  I like being smart.  Way I see it.  Nerds are the cool kids.  Only because they know they aren't cool.  Does that make sense?  People who think they are cool, usually aren't.  Break them down to the nuts and bolts..  They ain't fonzies.  They don't hit a juke box and magically turn on the new sound.  NERDS are inventing the new sounds.  Does "cool" pay the bills?  NO!  Nerds pay the bills.  Usually on time or early.  You won't catch a true nerd with water bill late fee...

brianchesscake

Sorry but does she look like a nerd to you happy.png

Wasn't she in the band 'Hanson'?

I agree. There's nothing wrong with it.  Say it loud, say it proud. I'm one of 10 types of people in the world. (Those familiar with binary and those who aren't.) I happen to think it's terrific that I still have my "rulebook" for "AD&D 2.5", which reduced all the actual books down to one two-sided sheet of paper of simple rules somewhat along the lines of having the DM roll for monster stats, and then make up a monster. Stuff like that. It's all right to be a nerd. I'm a music nerd. I'm still proud of noticing that Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" lifted its melody from CSNY's "Helpless", and that Mazzy Star would do the same thing ~20 years later. OT, I realize.

Shark_Sigma

My favorite movie franchises are Star Wars and Harry Potter, My favorite video game series is The Legend of Zelda, and nowadays when I'm not working I spend a lot of time playing/studying chess, or playing Runescape.....What do you think?
