Is chess a sport?

Hello everyone, I suspect this question has probably been debated a few times here, but I`d like to read some opinions on whether chess can be considered a sport or not.

I`ve just started a university course in sports studies, and my tutor group`s been debating what actually constitutes a sport. Almost everyone has argued that sport must include a physical element, and thus chess and bridge are not sports despite being organised and competitive. I tend to agree with this, but I`ve made the point that there`s an element of cultural bias within our group. We`re all physically active, athletic types so we`re highly likely to conclude that sport must be physical. I`d appreciate the thoughts of some chess players please.

It's better than a sport.

It is a question about language. Research the etymology of sport, then determine when the physical aspect displaced the broader understanding.

Current dictionary definitions limit sports to athletics, so the bias within your class is well within cultural norms.

On the other hand, there are many sporting bodies that consider chess (and maybe also games such as bridge). Your instructor should know this.
