Chess is a game

TheQueensWarrior
It’s the great equalizer around the globe spoken in a language most understand like art. So I agree, it’s both sport and art.

chess players sweat a lot, just like in other sports (ig it is because of when you calculating, it triggers your sweat glands or something)

It depends on the definition you give for a "sport" or what is classified as "art", "game" etc.

In my opinion, chess is a "game." It is a board game and that is it. Granted, it is a rewarding game, but it is a game nevertheless. I don't consider chess a sport (at all!) because it lacks the physical aspect that "sports" intrinsically have.

What makes something a "sport" though? Two teams competing against each other for points like hockey or football (American football or soccer)? Nope. Golf is considered a "sport" and it is an individual competing for less "score" (number of strokes). Is dancing a sport? I know dancing is surely physical, but I won't call it a sport. Maybe some consider it one though; "breakdancing" just recently became an Olympic Event scheduled for the next Olympic Games. Is car racing a "sport" I ask? NASCAR is considered a sport by many, despite it not being extremely physical in nature (although there is a little and certainly more danger than chess, but then again golf isn't that dangerous and it is considered a sport).

Depends on the definitions and different people give different definitions.

You’ve heard someone referring to a Chess board as a sports board?  I’ve never heard that term used in reference to a Chess board. It is alway a game board.

... and I agree that there are many “sports” that skirt the narrow English dictionary definition of sport, and if they are sports, then Chess could be considered a sport. E-sports, mind sports, individual sports, team sports, and all of the other “sports,” seem to broaden the definition of sport.

Fair enough, but my definition of "sport" is stricter than many other people. I do not consider "E-Sports" to be a sport for example. It is a "Video Game" hence a "game." Yes, it may have competitions and yes it may have "professionals" but there are also professional musicians, magicians, piano players and so on, yet I don't consider any of those to be a sport.

I agree that people must remain consistent with how broad they define a "sport." Even though my definition for a sport may be stricter, that doesn't take away anything from artforms, games and so on; it surely doesn't take away from my love of chess; but it is clearly not a sport by my standards. tongue.png
