Btw, I think its a game.

If you have ever played in a tournament then you know that chess is a sport.  It requires good physical conditioning, the ability to maintain hours of concentration.  Preparing for a tournament and or match requires as much physical preperation as mental.  Refer to the first Karpov vs. Kasparov match and how much weight Karpov lost during the match.

Bullethunder,

I think you might be misinterpreting the meaning of sport.  In fact, Sport is all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants.  Obviously, Chess can claim to entertain all the chess lovers of the world.  But to say that chess "aims to use, maintian, or improve physical fitness" is nothing more than wishfull thinking.  Chess is game that demands intellectual rigor.  Not physical fitness.  Let's look at the facts.  Who among the greatest chess players in the world were considered physically fit.  Moreover, which one of them, aimed to "maintain or improve" their physical fitness through the game of chess?  Answer?  I'm no Chess snob, but I'm pretty sure none of them pursued chess as a means to physical domination.

Again, quoting dictionaries (or wikipedia) is a non-argument.

Here's the part you left out from wiki:

Some non-physical activities, such as board games and card games are sometimes referred to as sports, but a sport is generally recognised as being based in physical athleticism.[citation needed]

Notice the citation needed.  I guess this is just one person's opinion.

But at least that person took the time to put their opinion into words, instead of googling for someone else's to copy and paste...

Yeah, it's probably a sport or game.

goldendog

Of course it's a spork.

It's certainly a game to many people though.  They pull it out of the closet like monopoly or connect 4 on a rainy day.  I'm guessing if you bought a set at wal mart it'd be in the board game section (or something like that) not sporting goods :)

You're right.  I did, and it was.

If all you do is sit at a table & move only your arms once in a while, it's not a sport, it's a game.  It's obviously a game.

This is the epitome of a troll question.

beardogjones

Young man, chess is neither a game or a sport - it is the very beating of

our heart.

Does anyone on chess.com actually understand what trolling is?

People truly believe chess is a sport. It's hilarious. Video games are sports also I would assume. So are the SAT's. And checkers? True athletes play checkers thank you sir g'day ma'am and praise the lord. I've been having this discussion for nearly 20 years now. It's amazing how many fruitcakes chess attracts.
Peedee
Also I'd like to know WHY quoting a dictionary is a non argument as the word "sport" is an English word and, yes, has a definition. Wait a day, I'm going to get a chess.com member "deepergray" who has taken more sports/exercise physiology classes than almost anyone I know. He competes in sports, he studies sports and theory and has also beaten masters OTB. Hes a friend of mine and I would certainly like his opinion here for all to read.
Peedee
This may be a troll question but I've been playing tournament chess and league chess OTB since 1981 and this question has been debated even back then. People used to get into furious arguments at the manhattan chess club over this. I can't believe it's still happening.
Peedee
The next logival(illogical) step would be to consider chess players athletes. Are you kidding me? Any of you people ever been to a chess tournament??

It's an art.

Acording to Lessons with a Grandmaster (June 2011) by GM Boris Gulko and (Psychology Professor) Joel Sneed, Gulko is quoted as saying that chess is an "intellectual sport"...combining elements of "art, science, and sport."

Chrisr2121's cite from the Olmypic committe didn't persuade the unwashed to relent, so I don't expect the above reference will either.

Oh the perils of running your lives from the Urban Dictionary, the Wiki, and the rigid confines of your Syllogistic Logic 101 course.

In the end of the day it doesnt really matter. You think it's a sport see it like a sport, you think it's a game treat it like one. A better physique might get a chess player to a better result same applies for healthy nutrition but it is really my opponent's brain I am worried about.

Elona

I consider anything with a competitive aspect to it to be a sport. It all depends on your perception of the word.

Bochumer

the germans call it schachsport! they call it a sport

fabelhaft

I don't think board or card games are sports, if so all of them should be called sports.

By the way, the Olympic games used to have competitions in literature, music, painting, sculpture and architecture once upon a time.

"What is chess, do you think? Those who play for fun or not at all dismiss it as a game. The ones who devote their lives to it for the most part insist that it's a science. It's neither. Bobby Fischer got underneath it like no one before and found at its center, art."

-- Bruce Pandolfini, Searching for Bobby Fischer

And that's all I have to say about that.
