Again, quoting dictionaries (or wikipedia) is a non-argument.
Here's the part you left out from wiki:
Some non-physical activities, such as board games and card games are sometimes referred to as sports, but a sport is generally recognised as being based in physical athleticism.[citation needed]
Notice the citation needed. I guess this is just one person's opinion.
But at least that person took the time to put their opinion into words, instead of googling for someone else's to copy and paste...
Is chess a sport or game? Post your ideas.
Btw, I think its a game.
If you have ever played in a tournament then you know that chess is a sport. It requires good physical conditioning, the ability to maintain hours of concentration. Preparing for a tournament and or match requires as much physical preperation as mental. Refer to the first Karpov vs. Kasparov match and how much weight Karpov lost during the match.
Bullethunder,
I think you might be misinterpreting the meaning of sport. In fact, Sport is all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Obviously, Chess can claim to entertain all the chess lovers of the world. But to say that chess "aims to use, maintian, or improve physical fitness" is nothing more than wishfull thinking. Chess is game that demands intellectual rigor. Not physical fitness. Let's look at the facts. Who among the greatest chess players in the world were considered physically fit. Moreover, which one of them, aimed to "maintain or improve" their physical fitness through the game of chess? Answer? I'm no Chess snob, but I'm pretty sure none of them pursued chess as a means to physical domination.
