Is chess a waste of time?

I have played chess all of my life and spent tons of money on books, videos, tournament fees, sets and whatnot. What have I ever gotten out of it except a wasted life? Maybe I should have taken up drinking or drugs or something.

So, you claim chess is bad for you, then you say you should do drugs.

It is a big waste of time... unless you are a GM or something. On the other hand, doing something you enjoy doing and engages your brain is not a bad thing...

You don't have to spend a lot of money if any on Chess. It can be a hobby of yours or even a casual activity you can do occasionally. What you want out of your life and how you define wasted is up to you but avarice is far more wasteful than playing a game that helps keep your brain sharp. You don't have to spend all your time on it or throw a lot of finances to it however but that's a choice you need to make in everything you do with your life. That said, it appears this may stem from other things going on in your life that is causing dissatisfaction with how your life is going.

If you got a regular job or business, or studying in college, its a nice hobby. If either none, its a waste of time.

Is chess a waste of time?

if you play it in chess.com, then it is a freaking waste of time...

chess.com is getting worse n worse....

learn something from "lichess", you morons at "chess.com"

Instead of upgrading, it's declining day by day in the site's performance...

have you tried thinking this out to find the answer for yourself ?

you could try the drink and drugs for a month or so and let us all know if you are achieving your life goals with them.

You can have your opinion and it's ok to speak it out. But calling us morons is out of line. Public apology needed.

public apology ? that's a bit harsh.

I think it's only a waste of time if you do it for the wrong reasons, like any other activity.  For example, if you play basketball for the sole purpose of becoming the best basketball player in the world, then you should understand that the chances of you becoming the best basketball player in the world are infantesimally small and therefore you are probably going to be disappointed - that is, if you play basketball for no other reason than to become the best.  Chess I think is exactly the same thing, or any other sport for that matter.  I don't feel like chess is a waste of time for me, since it helps me to relax and even meditate in some instances.  It makes me think about important decisions and whether or not certain things are worth doing.  Chess has proven to help the logical functions of your brain and increases the ability to concentrate. It also helps analytical thinking.

There's also the element of chess which in my opinion is one of the hardest things to describe, which is the abstract beauty of it.  For me, chess is like music - it's beautiful.

Chess improves concentration and aesthetically the pieces and moves are very pleasing. It is also a sport and requires all the mental strength associated with winning and losing. On a wider level anything that does not directly save people's lives can be deemed a waste of time. It is up to the individual to decide what activities give their life meaning and as far as activities or addictions go, chess is surely one of the most gentle and harmless.

Saving lives - unless it's yours - can also be viewed as a waste (your) time.

About chess, I have the same dilemma , I might be better learning a foreign language or coding, but I think chess has caught me and it helps me distract from problems, later I can think  how to solve those problems without rushing or making a bad  decision.

Thats my coach! He's the one who got me interested in playing chess! Before I met him I wanted to study music or computer programming or something that I could make a decent liviing at but he told me that I had the talent to become a grand master but look at me now, a grand patzer.
