Nobody likes it anymore. When I was younger in the 70's, it was on the TV all the time. What happened?

what happened is the younger generation is not intelligent enough to play a game that is complexed as chess requires carefull thought and stratigy with every move

 ummm... no.

Nostalgia isn't what it it used to be...

Chess is a recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee with FIDE being the recognized International Sports Federation for chess since June 1999.[As a member of theInternational Olympic Committee, FIDE adheres to its rules, including controversially having doping tests. The prospects of chess becoming an Olympic sporting event at some future date remain unclear.

The FIDE has asked to be included in 2012 but were refused . Its only a matter of time......Wink

MsJean, you crack me up.  you previously said that you misspoke when you said chess was a sport and now post proof, as it were, that chess is a sport.

but just to add more controversy, i don't think the olympics follow the definition of sport, either.  they follow what is popular, sure.  but diving, snowboarding, gymnastics, and figure skating do not have winners that are decided by objective means.

but i think chess is fine

MsJean

@ ponnupazoozu         LOL Im sure thats true....

@planeden         No I said I was sorry IF the word was such a big deal. So I posted this in protest. Im not the only person who may use the "word" that will not be named .......to speak of the game. The post is about the popularity of Chess.

The strong man is he who loves and recognizes his kinship with all things. Impersonal love is magical; it works marvels; it breaks even the stony heart.    G. de Purucker

I was not able to locate any reliable numbers for  this year but According to Grandmaster  Susan Polgar, four-time women's world chess champion, there are at least over 700 million  chess players worldwide. This makes chess one of THE most popular sports  around the world. Chess federation estimated in 2006 about  600 million players world wide. Does anyone else have more current and reliable  figures. Obviously chess is not dead  ....tsk tsk

 It's  not a sport it's a game .... tsk tsk.

Chess is certainly dying in the UK yes.

Why would you say that?  There are many, many chess clubs in England.  Have you attended chess tournaments? Where is the, "UK", anyway?  Is that Scotland, Ireland, England...what?  I reside in the U.S.A., but I don't say I'm from, "North America".  Smile

I would not blame intellegence levels. I would go more for popular culture, the advent of the internet, bad education, moral values on the floor and general degradation of society as a whole. The kids are smart they simply aren't getting the right influences.
