Is Chess for Nerds

I played Chess in computer class, I played Chess in the atrium at school. No one called me a nerd. Perhaps they were thinking it, but I like Chess. I think people are first afraid to try it, but once we started playing in class more people became interested in the games I was playing and sometimes watched. I went undefeated in my comp class last semester. w00t w00t.

Did anybody see the latest episode of Community? the entire school breaks out in a paintball fight but only the Chess Club team is portrayed nerdily.

There is a canadian film called Hampton High. I have to check it out. I plan to write a screenplay involving chess and putting it in a positive light!

Think about this chess champion.  .  . a popular sport in Canada is hockey and a lot of people play it and like it and love it, in America you know things like football basketball golf darts and poker are like popular games and monopoly is really popular there and in Mexico a lot of people like soccer and they play that game. and just about every country likes competative swimming and gymnastics, or track or cross country running, wrestling, but chess is the most popular game in the world.  You don't have to worry about being cool with those guys, you have us friends all over the world who think it is a good thing and not doesn't make you a geek

Nerds is a term created by delinquent individuals to describe people who are better than they are but simply cannot admit it on a personal level.

I for example, have been quite an athlete most of my life, and have played chess for most of my life...so who says you cannot do both?

To tell u the truth, If ur into this game, play a lot, wanting to get better, wanting to be stronger, U've got a little nerd in you.  I've heard people say only nerds play this game, but they're not far from the truth. If u find yourself constantly immersed in the game, u are nerd at heart. And truthfully, U've gotta have at least the heart if u wanna get better at this game. I can say I'm nerd :-)

I prefer to think of myself as a Geek. :)

The key quality of a nerd is not what they like to do, but whether they are immersed in it and inflict it on others.  Do you talk to people about Chess if they don't like Chess?  That's nerdy.  More than that, it's a bit rude.

A related quality is how much time you spend on it.  It's related because if you spend all your time on Chess, you end up with no other common interests, and thus no way to interact with other people.  That's nerdy.

Not that nerdy is necessarily all that bad, mind you.

Meanwhile, my strong advice to anyone who is worried that people think his or her Chess playing is nerdy is to keep playing Chess, but look in the mirror and check out your wardrobe.  If you are a sharp dresser, and a good Chess player, people aren't all that likely to think you are nerdy.  If you are an out of fashion slob, then the label is much more likely.  Nothing about dressing better and maintaining good hygiene will make your Chess game suffer.

Check out the site below.  The people listed in it are not nerds.

Take your pick:

nerd |nərd|noun informala foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious one of those nerds who neverasked a girl to dance.• an intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline or profession he single-handedly changed the Zero image of the computer nerd into one of savvy Hero.

Chess is for everyone. But because media and norms over the years made chess for nerds, many chess players are nerds. But if kids were keeping it real, and wouldnt mind other kids calling you a nerd, we would have ALOT more chess players. I know its not like this in countrys like Russia and India, but here in Denmark it is, and i believe its so in most of euroupe and the states.
If i havent keeped it real when i was a little kid, i would never play chess.

A proof of this theory: I teach chess on a little school, in the SFO (the place kids are at after school). I teach 6-12 years old just after school. There, its cool to play chess! You are not a nerd if your good at chess, you are the cool guy! Here about 70% of the kids play chess.

I couldn't care less what others think of me for playing chess.  It seems if people cannot sway another his/her way of thinking they begin downgrading that person's intelligence. Eleanor Roosevelt said it well when she said, "No one can make you feel inferior without you consent."

Straight A s is for nerds too.

Okay, everyone that says chess players are nerds just step up face to face with Mr. Lewis  and say that.  Oh, by the way, be sure your mouth-piece is in correctly.

“I play chess about four hours a day in training camp.  You have to decide what move to use, or what combination of moves.  I think less when I box because the reaction time is a lot quicker, but some people call me the chess boxer because they say I think too much in the ring.  I take my time and they don’t see the action they want.  Some boxers just go in there and just throw punches and hope to win…”
