Is chess good for children?
You can still socialize while being chess player. My best friends are all chess players.
Playing chess doesn't prevent you from developing social skills. There are public speaking classes you can take to help you develop social skills.
You can also develop social skills through chess. If you get good enough you can offer private chess lessons, which can definitely help build confidence speaking to people if you lack some. And, if you have any interest, you can become a tournament director, which can be helpful too.
I think it's good. It teaches you not to waste tempi. e.g. why pass the car in front of you signalling to change lanes when you can just stay in your lane and get around him after he gets out of your way. It teaches you to control your space. e.g. you can use people and objects to shield yourself from threats. It teaches you when you can get away with asserting yourself. e.g. don't rob a bank if it's guarded. Okay so that last one was weird. It also teaches you how to build structures like pawn chains with solid foundations. e.g. When you're stacking or packing put the big stuff on the bottom like building with blocks. It's sort of mental feng shui combat. I know this post sounds absurd. But it's not.
Is chess actually good for children? Yes maybe it expands their comprehensive abilities but it can also take over their life and time from socializing which is way more important for social and personal developement at smaller ages
Same can be said for reading, studying etc. Balance?
"Show me a good chess player and I'll show you a ruined childhood." Someone in the Charlotte, NC chess club said that about 30 years ago.
Anything done in great excess, can be detrimental. Singling one specific thing (IE: Chess) is pointless in my opinion.
I am 75, but learned to play chess when I was eight. By twelve my parents allowed me to belong to a couple of chess clubs – one in my small town and one eight miles away in what is now a city – and I met and talked to adults on equal terms. I played regularly against a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, a British diplomat who had met five US Presidents, a local artist, and a variety of other adults who enriched my growing up and knowledge of the world. But this of course was OTB: I guess on-line is not the same.
