Is chess Homophobic?

God, we've had some weird discussions in these forums. It all started with someone saying Kasparov was sexist (well, they said racist, but meant sexist). A lot of people said some interesting things, and then it went crazy, spawning exponential threads. To summerise:

Chess (and, generally, the Chess community) is not racist.

Chess (and, generally, the Chess community) is not sexist.

I cannot but help completing the picture. Is chess Homophobic?

Uuummmmm..... no.

Anything else need covering?

Is chess played by mostly nerds?

Is it a sport?

Why isn't it on TV more?

Are we better people than folks who don't pay chess?

Sadly, I know I am leaving some out.

Ha! Rael has found a chink in the armour. Chess is indeed homophobic!

Hmm, is that from a video Rael?

From the quote, that's from "One night in Bangkok" from the musical 'Chess'

yes, chess players are smarter than the average person
yes, we exert a lot of energy to play... and it is very competitive
because blitz is too fast for commentary, and longer time controls get boring
yes, in every way

You really don't know how much I hate the term homophobic. I have heard this term thrown around so much to make people seem intolerant it just sickens me. The media literly uses name calling to shape people the way they want to.  Who is really afraid of gay people?

Phobia:

a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.

Liberal media... sigh...

Interesting. I've never thought of the etymology of the word "Homophobic" as being innacurate for it's modern usage. If someone was really a Homophobe, they would literally 'fear' a homosexual person, much as an arachnophobe fears a spider. I wonder what a more accurate word would be, along the lines of 'Racist' and 'Sexist'...

Sorry, off topic.
