it actually is an incredibly beneficial pastime, because playing chess results in better brain function, improved memory and cognitive abilities, strategic thinking and attention improvement. ... Scientists also claim that playing chess can improve mental age by up to 14 years.

Medical schmedical, whadda those quacks know? Lemme tell ya about what happened to my cousin Paulie:

Now Paulie had this hustle hauling carts down at the K-Mart, only the thing was his manager was a bit tough on the kid, ya know?

So me and the boys we go down there and we have ourselves a little chat with the guy, turns out he's a former state champion, whadda ya know?

So now Paulie, now he don't play so good, ya know? So we put him on the computer, and I don't know what's going on in that room, but it sure is a lot of yelling and banging noises...

Year later, and cousin Paulie has gotten a little bit better. The manager don't yell so much anymore, and Paulie has even gotten himself a job putting all that stuff up on the shelves, so don't be telling me chess doesn't help you advance in life.

If you switch the first two words, that was literally the text of the abstract of the study that explored this question.

No! Chess is a deadly parasite that consumes both the cerebellum and cerebrum.
