It is just a board game. But a very interesting and complex one. I don't have a problem with that.

It is easy to say, chess is just a game with wooden pieces on a wooden board. Football is just 22 men kicking a bag of wind around a field. Poetry is just a collection of words. Famous artists simply put paint onto a canvas.

Any human activity can be made to sound trite and simplistic. But all of the above activities, in my opinion, are interesting and worthwhile pursuits because of the meaning that they give to the participants. That meaning is possible because the activities are complex.

On the other hand, Ludo (another board game), is not (in my opinion) very interesting primarily because it is not very complex. After a while a player will understand all there is to understand about it and lose interest.

I have been playing chess for over 45 years. I still have much to learn and I am still fascinated by chess.
