Is chess like Smash Bros and other fighting games?

In fighting video games, you tend to choose 1 or 2 characters to specialize in. Rarely do people try 3 or more.

In chess, do you have to choose one or two openings and specialize in them?

No, you don't "have" to choose two. You can choose ten, or zero of you want.

I mean, in fighting games, you don't have to choose one or two, but those who choose more than two rarely get very good. The exceptions are few.

In a sense you're correct, everyone has opening they're more comfortable with (similar to characters in smash bros) but the top tier players are able to play any of them depending on the situation. (Once again, similar to smash bros)
