It is officialy considered as a sport since 2000
Is chess really a sport?

A game that requires some skills to win is a sport. Chess is a game that requires skill to win - chess is a sport. The same with poker, its also a sport

The International Olympic Committee has accepted chess as a sport. So it is a sport.
The Olympiad is not the Olympics.
No problem. More than 100 countries have accepted chess as a sport. And olympic committee has accepted it as an olympic sport. And I know what is olympiad.

True enough about the IOC and chess

They must have seen gormally and Irina in action

@lfPatriotGames OK. So the distinction between what a sport is and is not is physical effort vs mental effort. I can go with that I think.
that's how the vast majority of the worlds population determine what a sport is. Sports require physical skill, effort, or input. Chess doesn't.
People still get confused about chess (or checkers or backgammon or other games) as sports because they are competitive and have rules. Until the definition of sport changes (and it might someday) chess is not a sport.

Because the E in ESPN stands for entertainment. It comes before the S which stands for sports.
Also you will notice ESPN has ventured off into other non sports areas as well. ESPNs own news release about one of their talk shows is "a deliberate and well paced conversational format in which they discuss sports topics, news, culture, and social issues."
ESPN is obviously very proud to feature non sports programming.

It requires physical body movement. I don't think I can move my pieces with my eyes
It requires hours of training, hard work, and preparation. Yes, it is a sport.
So does music and so does art. Ridiculous.

Didn't need to throw the word Ridiculous in there, but you're right. Where can we actually draw the line? I think it can be considered a sport because you have team events, which you don't as much have on the competition level in music and art.

A warning: I'm glad that there is a mod participating in this thread, because this subject ALWAYS descends into rudeness, name-calling, and downright unacceptable behavior, once all the rational arguments have been exhausted. I'm not saying to request this thread to be locked, but to just be careful because I feel this will almost certainly happen, and I just want everyone to be aware.
Gormally vs aronian was definitely sport.
The endgame of krush vs zatonskih was also definitely sport.
