Is chess taken seriously in schools nowadays?

When I was at middle school (nearly 10 years ago now) there was a chess club that ran once a week. However, hardly anyone took it seriously. It was always full of people that messed around or harassed players, or elitist jerks who thought they were better than you. It was horrible, and certainly did not do much for my game at all.
I'm very interested to know if there are any young members on here that still have this problem.
