Is en passant capturing "unsportsmanlike??"

I've had numerous opponents take exception to my capturing en passant, stating it is "cheap" or unsportsmanlike. Some seem to be unfamiliar with the rule, like one guy who said he was going to report me for an illegal move. I advised him of the en passant rule and he called me more names and then signed off. I just figure if GMs use it them I'm certainly not above it.

Anyway just thought I'd ask.....

It's certainly not unsportsmanlike.

I always enjoy it when people come in here blustering about illegal moves being played. It happens at least several times a month.

thank you. kind of thought so.

By that logic, checkmating is also unsportsmanlike, but only if it's against me. tongue.png
On a serious note, they should learn the rules of chess.

Is moving a Pawn two steps instead of one unsportsmanlike? Isn't it unfair to avoid an opposing Pawn's challenge?

That's why the en-passant rule exists.

Unsportsmanlike?! Uh, no, it’s a standard part of the game.

It just means u play too many weak opponents. Only losers claim rules in any competition r unsportsmanlike. We never hear a winner saying "yeah, I just won, but gee whiz, I sure think the rules r unsportsmanlike." It's only the losers whining.

I bet y'all haven't heard gee whiz in a while.

I agree.

I once had a "friend"*, and whenever we were playing ANY game, if I was ahead, it was cheating. no matter what. Chess, Football, even Random Chance games!!

* enemy

As long as the "is chess a sport?" debate continues, there can be no definitive answer. Not cheap though.

Of course not!  It's the perfect strategy at times.  I've won games as a direct result of using it.  I agree that many people don't know it's available .  There is often a VERY long pause after an en passant capture....always makes me think my opponent is thinking "what the#$%^ just happened".  Love it!

His Pawn Cheated And Killed My Pawn!'‎

Every day at Chess.com we get a lot of suggestions, feedback and bug reports—and we really appreciate it!

One of the most common bug reports looks something like this:

In my game, I moved my pawn to h4 and somehow his pawn from g4 managed to kill it and jump to h3. Smells suspiciously like hacking.

Or...

During my last game, I moved the pawn forward double space. Which places it beyond the enemy's pawn reach. But his pawn illegally cheated and killed my pawn. Hit replay and you will be able to see the move wasn't legal and caused my king to be threatened. As a consequence, I withdrew from the game. I'm not going to be playing if the opponent is allow to cheat. Fix the game so it doesn't happen again.

Or, here's another good one...

Recently, I have had 4 incidents where I have moved a pawn up two squares from its starting position, and it shows as such if I go back one move using the arrows, only for it to be taken as if I had only moved it up one square. So the game history will show the pawn on the square two up, e.g. a7 to a5, but in the actual gameplay, it will be taken as if I had moved it to a6. This is usually in the endgame, where pawn to queen promotion is at stake. It's a glitch and is annoying the $%&# out of me as I'm losing close games because of this bug.

Of all of them we've ever received, this player was the most apologetic and humble:

I'm awful so please ignore how badly I'm playing, but whenever I move c7 to c5, the d5 pawn takes as if my pawn was on c6, which is super strange. You can see it in the game log. Unless I'm missing something, that makes no sense.
