Every move on the chess board is a problem like a puzzle, even the opening move. Chess is a game.

Chess is a game. That makes it better than a sport.

karpov lost something like 20 pounds in his first Chess Champion match against Kasparov. Kasparov keep on drawing the mental stress on Karpov was extremely great. There has to be some physical aspect of chess to lose 20 pounds.

That is why Kasparov says if you are in better shape you play better chess!

Where did you learn of this ? I would be interested to learn what Physiological changes chess can do to it's players.

karpov lost weight because he was taking methanphetamines, not because he was thinking too hard

 It's a vicious cycleLaughing

I just looked up definition of sport, and it being rather vague, I can safely say that chess falls into this category, so....

My question is: can chess players be considered athletes?  (like, mindathletes?)

Mind is not a physical thing.

The opening is far from a puzzle, there is no solution, it's more of a system or set up. Sure there are times like in an endgame where it can be broken down into a puzzle. But more often there are many paths and approaches. And there many non-puzzle like moves that are strategic or even psychological that gives it a more definite sport aspect than the it's just a game way of looking at it.

I don't think chess is a sport, because i define sport as being something that people watch to be entertained, and if i were to see a chess game in the same setting as a football/soccer/baseball game, i'd get bored fast because as i am not a GM, i can't see everything that someone intends to do with a move in 3 seconds or less or however long it takes them to move, so i'd rather just find the game online and analyze it. some people might like to watch anyway, but the reason all the other sports are exciting is because the people are displaying incredible physical feats, and it doesn't take much knowledge of the game to understand that. Chess, on the other hand, is not nearly as exciting, because if someone makes a "shocking" or "ingenious" move, you have to know how chess is played in general, and you have to have a list of moves that you would or would not make in order to be shocked or surprised by a move.

sport= 1.an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
game=1. an amusement or pastime: children's games.
2. the material or equipment used in playing certain games: a store selling toys and games.
3. a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.

these are from dictionary.com...chess falls into the 3rd definition of sport and game so its a matter of opinion i guess

Monopoly is not a sport, scrabble is not a sport, bridge is not a sport, chess is not a sport.

And finally slack, actually, i think that it is said that white has the advantage in a game for the decide openings for both sides and hold the momentum and rhtyhm (love this word) to begin with.  I may be wrong, but that is what i have heard.

Well, somebody has to go first.

The way I learned it, white's first move 'disturbs the equilibrium' of the chess match, and black restores it. And there are many ways to play an equal game without making copy-cat moves.

So just because black goes second does not automatically mean he is at a disadvantage.

I think playing whites it is like serving in tennis. You have the advantage, but you can "brake the point". I agree that chess is not a sport but ESPN plays poker like a sport! I think we got as much skill as those "profesional players"

64 squares is the smallest sports arena. The amount of physical excursion is irrelevant, what matters is what you can do within those 64 squares that is important. The deciding factor is that chess is unlimited within the rules of the piece movements, meaning a never ending scope for creative expression and skill. This is the real definition separating games from sports. Checkers is a game because it was solved and thus limited. However with Chess there is more inherent possibility within those 64 squares than there are atoms in the universe! It is most definitely a sport, don't let it's size fool you.

nice speil but u cannot say there is creativity, u will not make a move cuz it's pretty, u will make the best possible move by thinking of what the other won't expect or what you would think someone else would do.  and it is more of having a complete veiw of the game and knowing what to do with it, rather than skill

Of course there is creativity. Like you said, thinking what the other wont expect-that is creative. Skill is something of a combination of creativity, knowlegde, experience, it's being good at what you know.

1 that which amuses in general; diversion; pastime 2 A particular game or play pursued for diversion, especially an outdoor or athletic game, as baseball, football, track, tennis, swimming, etc. Chess falls under the first and the second, since the second definition states especially. I would say chess is a sport.
