Is it Better...?

This is the old Devil's bargain again. What are you willing to give up to become what you want to be? When you get where you wanted to be, how do you feel when you look back at what you did? There's no way to judge this stuff up front with a one-size-fits-all theory.
Well put, doc, but, at a certain age, if one has become a master at his/her craft, is that what it's all about?
Are social norms unnoticeable? Does one only think of their goal, ignoring what's happenning around them?

There's nothing to stop a well-socialized person familiar with all the norms and standards of his own society from striving for some goal--for instance, being a chess know-it-all.
It takes a certain kind of clueless obsessive--a Captain Nemo type or Captain Ahab (lots of captains in the nutter category...hmmm), for instance--who both goes after his big goal and steps on all the sore social toes of his society to really make a pest of himself and probably end up ostracized or in exile.
at no cost, reaching 2000 is very easy when u know how...
you must have taken lessons from five of swords.
It also depends on the pursuit of course. Chess has virtually zero overlap with life. But in my opinion it's virtually impossible to be for example a great composer/songwriter without a well rounded and informed intelligence.
To be a jack of all trades, or, a master of one?
--- A very good question, and I wish that I had a good answer lol.
Me, too! I'm waiting for fiveofswords to show his brilliance! His writing is so pointed, and copied from wiki...
Fiveofswords will only drag Ziryab in here by the short and curlies and they will still be beating the crap out of each other on page 200.
getting to 2000 Elo isn't difficult, I read a couple of books was all it took, but getting to 3000 seemed a stretch so I just got busy careerwise then.
