Is it ok if I use the maximum of my time in daily games?

In reply to @spielkalb (more or less) about how it is good form to make use of conditional moves in case of captures or checks:

Would it be an idea for the computer to automatically execute forced moves?

In that case, you wouldn't have to wait a day (or three) for a move you know is coming anyway.

AndreAnda

The argument against that is that it could help the opponent if he/she is not able to find the only move (for example, the only saving move is an en passant or castling)

AndreAnda

I wouldn't mind it myself.

AndreAnda

I meant I wouldn't mind it if forced moves were automatically executed

AndreAnda

If it is a direct response to the previous post, then surely that's fine.

I think it is important to find out for yourself that a move is forced, especially for low-level players like me. That learning process would be taken away. This is the only drawback on your suggestion I can think of.

Otherwise, why not? It might help to speed up tournaments...

I don't think you had trouble understanding, you just seem to disagree.  As for (1) what I said.  The average time  / move should be a fraction of the maximum generally the next level down.  A 2 player should generally move in 1 day.  A 3 day player generally in less than 2.  A 5 day player generally in less than 3, etc...  The maximum should be a rarity.

As for (2) yes.  Exactly.  A 1-day / move player is expecting to wrap the game up in about a week.  A 14/day player is planning on the game taking a year.   Of course a 1 day / move game can take 3 months but the people who signed up for that aren't looking for a game to take months.   People taking the maximum are violating the social expectation.

I disagree with you too. You say taking the maximum time is generally seen as annoying and rude. On who's behalf are you opining? You offer an elaborate description of when a player should move and furnish a theory of what people are expecting- maybe this is your own personal opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it, but it is yours. You dont speak for the community at large. There are no implicit or explicit expectations as to when I should make my move within the agreed upon time control and it is unreasonable and arrogant of you to suggest that there are unwritten rules or standards that I should be following because this is your preference. When we agree to play with a one day time control, you may have an expectation that the game will last a week, but that's not necessarily my expectation. My expectation is that each side will have 24 hours to make their move.  Use it as you see fit. The rules are clear.

I've had games last 4-5 months. No big deal. Just play when you're ready. Sometimes I can play several moves in a day. Sometimes I don't have time to really think about my moves for a few days in a row so I'll play the 'obvious move' games but not the ones that require some analysis. If you don't want your opponent to potentially take 3 days, don't play 3 day a move chess.

@jbolden1517,

As @Shock_Me elaborated, you didn't answer to my first question. Why do think your personal opinion reflects a general unwritten law of this community at all?

Imagine we were flatmates and agreed to you using the bathroom for half an hour. Then, after 15 minutes I'd knock on the door and would state that your time was over. What would you think of me in this case?

30 minutes in the bathroom for a Dude is weird.

Simply take as much of the allowable time as you need for that particular move but no more time than what you need.  Then you will be playing within the spirit of the game.

One of the site's features is to view your opponent's average time per move. Take this into consideration when accepting a match if it truly bothers you. The only real problem with daily chess that needs fixing is vacation abuse.

WSama

Until there exists a rule where on each move each player must submit a time allowance request and have both parties agree on it, you should use all of the time you can.

It's a game, and games have rules. Bending the very rules agreed upon, pressuring a chess loving participant and denying them their right to play the game by the established rules, should amount to cheating.

If you love chess, don't be a cheat.

If it is in a tournament, it can be somewhat inconsiderate to everyone else depending on how slow you are moving, especially if you are in clearly losing positions.  Don't make the entire tournament wait another month because you are down a queen but don't want to resign.

If its just a random game, use as much time as you need as long as you are not just stalling.
