Is it ok to read a chess book with, just a chess board?

Chess book + chess board.

Will it be enough to get the knowledge, will it cover all the ideas, so that I know what's french opening is for example.

My friend only has a chess board and a book, will he absorb all of it? Or he needs to see the games? Examples, maybe videos.

What if he doesn't have all that just a book and a chess board.

Book Aron Nimzowitsch My system I'm talking about

Erlier days people just learned from books right?

Generations of chess players learned from books, so they can certainly be effective for learning. Whether "My System" will be helpful depends on the player's strength. A beginner won't understand much of it.

What about all the tree variations how do you cope with it?

I'm working through My System right now with just the book and a board.  I'm a beginner-level chess player and I can say that I'm learning a lot.  HOWEVER, my advice to you is to TAKE YOUR TIME.  I spent a good two weeks on Chapter 1 about tempo until I fully understood it.  I didn't glaze over all of the theoretical moves in parenthesis like  "not b4 because (move 1....move 22)." Be disciplined. Work through it.

Everyone says that my system is no good for beginners. This is nonsense. Have you even read it? What part of it is so hard to understand?

Yes, I've "read" it, or more accurately studied it. The first time was when I was around 1500 USCF. Years later I went back to it when rated 1800 and understood it so much better. Based on that experience, I maintain that a beginner can spend their study time far more profitably than by studying Nimzovich.

If you haven't read it then that's fine. Although some may regard not having read, My System as a shocking gap in a chess player's education, I am not so judgemental. I would just rather you tell the truth and admit you haven't read it instead of scaring beginners away from such a chess classic by saying it is too advanced.

If you had read and understood what I wrote, you would have responded with something that makes sense. I have no patience for trolls, so my part in this conversation is at an end.

I look at an opening so at the moment I'm looking at Sicilian Alapin, I'll play the first three moves (on real board in front of me) then I'll look with my lowly rated mind and think of move four, then I will reset the board then look at book to move 5 and thEn try to understand re set play it again try to come up with ideas re set again the same and write down my thoughts at the same time, for instance e4 c5 c3... Either d6, e5, d4, g6, b6, go from there look at book write down my thoughts re set so on and so forth, my rating is 1060 and I'm currently playing in a tournament I'm 2/5 average rating agisnst is 1585, also break up your chess study with puzzles, john Thursby 75 chess problems is so good, and if you have mates in real life play them and ask to play the opening you're studying...

Absolutely, I would recommend "My system" especially for beginner players. My 5 year old nephew is working through it right now. It got him to about 850 FIDE, he says he's pretty satisfied by it. But it's hard to believe anything he says, because he's notorious liar, and I don't even think he knows how to read.
