@OP

I hate to break it to you, but becoming a GM is not feasible considering your age and rating. You can’t become a GM through online 30 sec. Also, while I understand that beating your Dad (1200) is a nice personal accomplishment, in the wider chess world beating a 1200 is not an accomplishment. I’m about your age (14) and rated like 2100 (OTB) and my chances of becoming a GM are very slim. You can still enjoy chess but you can’t expect to be a GM.

Yes.  Absolutely.  Know body knows what’s inside you but you.  If you put the time in, it’s possible.  With all the content these days available to consume and learn from it’s more doable these days then it’s ever been before.  If your the kind of person that tends to kick butt on anything you do, you’re driven, disciplined, and work hard and don’t stop tell you achieve your goals, it can be done. I’m not a chess master but someone who has kicked some serious butt in life and know what it takes to achieve what others say you can’t.  Don’t let anybody define your capabilities.  Because we can’t do, we want to tell everybody else they can’t.  Mediocre people will always be scared of someone who wants to achieve something difficult.  It makes the rest of us feel bad about ourselves.   Bottom line, only you can answer that question.

I agree - Anything like this is really possible if you try hard enough.  I went from not knowing chess to where I am now in about 1-2 years.  (It's possible.)

But the problem is that it is much harder to get rating once you are at the top.

Instead of asking the community about this forum topic and playing 30 second chess, you should really focus on improving.

8 years it took Magnus to become GM. But training like that requires serious dedication and focus. Based on your talk about Enderdragon and Minecraft, you won't even make 2000.

A reasonable goal which is one I have is to get the CM title.

Interesting thread.

The first two games are 3 minute which can explain the horrible technique at the end.

If you want my advice, stick to minecraft.

If you truly want to improve your chess, I suggest working on long time controls (30+ min) and reading up some opening and endgame theory. I also think you should analyze a lot of your games, as well as using the puzzle training feature on chess.com.

Exactly! You only had 20 seconds left. If you had a longer time control, you would improved your chess by thinking out the moves.

Oh, my mistake! wink.png

I'm just trying to help - all I'm saying is that to become an extremely good chess player, you should play long time controls to strengthen your skills!

if we all could be special, it wouldn't be special
so I am not gonna lie
just being able to jump is no sign you will ever fly
but of course you can always try :)

The answer is a resounding YES! Many IMs have gotten their GM norms within the span of five years.

Wrong!
