Yes. It is also possible for you to win a Nobel prize and to sprout a pair of wings.
Well, since Kissinger and Obama won the Nobel, NovaStar would have to get in the position to direct the armed forces to kill many people, to have a chance.

Perhaps avoid the Nobel Peace price and try for one that doesn't involve so much militarism? i.e. chemistry, physics, medicine or literature. Or try for an IgNobel award.
well of course your coach is more familiar with you than we are, but you could try and prove the coach wrong by beating him
some people believe that with suitable opportunity and training gm level play is possible for most, I dont really believe this, my thoughts are that everyone has their own ceiling and improvements past this are only marginal
I hope your ceiling novastar is higher than all but the few and gm level is attainable
>:)
Thanks so much for all of your replies. I really appreciate it.
Yes, it is remotely possible. You can (conceivably) do it...but there simply aren't that many GMs in the world, so it's not bloody likely. On the other hand, your coach seems to be (frankly) something of a bozo...not exactly the pinnacle of encouragement, is he?
Thanks. That's all I wanted to know - if it was possible.

Obama got the peace prize for doing nothing...not sure this is a good analogy.
Obama got the "Peace prize" while doubling drone attacks on civilians, funerals, weddings, etc., in Afghanistan, and the Pakistan borders. His acceptance speech for the award was some sick 'War is Peace' nonsense. It is an apt analogy.
everything is possible, if u have the time and the discipline..
these are the two ingredients for success.
You can make it if you want it enough. The problems in getting stronger are nearly always the same.
Bad practice
More theory than consolidation
Lack of opponents/play
Lack of enthusiasm/drive toward an aspect (s)
Ego
Burn out (such as I have suffered with)
My concern is that the process of becoming a GM is on-going and your answer is a definite result of tireless effort. So the more narrow question is 'will you remain enthusiastic for as long as it takes you to achieve your goal', and to a lesser extent, what would becoming a GM achieve for you, what is the purpose of that - if you mean to play among the worlds best, in the most elite tournaments, and have a chance of becoming a national, or international champion then by all means your goal might retain its incentive. That is all.
I have the same question. I am 13 and I want to take chess seriously and I want to know If I can make a career out of chess
Well, you could put together a round robin with the weakest possible range of the titled players, and then score extremely high, and just do that for all of your norms. I guess the rating would be the difficult part.

I'm going to answer this question, and all variants of it that pop up at any time in the future, the same way: If you have the potential, you already know it. By the age of 13, anyone today with the potential to become a GM has a terrific understanding of almost all aspects of the game, is probably already a senior master, and has taken a number of scalps in high-level tournaments. He or she is confident that with several more years of intensive study and play, the GM title is coming.
If you are 13 and are on chess.com asking if you might ever become a GM, the answer is most likely NO.
Didn't US GM Bryan Smith learn the game at 13 (1993)?
He became a GM in 2013.
Novastar, there is only one way to find out, and that is to try; but I think you will have to devote every fiber of your being to it.
The OP posted this 5 years ago. Disappeared 4 years ago. Do you suppose he is a GM by now?
It would've been a great case study.
