is it possible for someone to have an easier time beating higher rated players?

Hello, my rating in 10 min games has fluctuated between 1250 and 1400. I seem to have an easier time beating players who are between 1300-1375 than I do against players 1250-1300 (and 1375+ i have a tougher time with again).

Maybe I let my guard down when I’m playing 1250-1300 or I’m playing people in that range when my rating drops so I’m slumping and not playing as well, but otherwise I can’t see why this would be. Is this common?

There are 2 common reasons why i lose to lower rated players:

1. Letting my guard down, relaxing too much.

2. Automatically following a line that i have been studying and not paying enough attention to my opponents moves.

My guess is it's not about the rating range but about active play or passive play, if you play too passively your opponent might initiate the attack and put you in the defensive mode.
