Dude you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Wonderful, I am going to grow two extra hands and become a concert pianist.

I think I might live forever as well.

Now you are just being facetious

Hey, you started it.

Anyway, check your challenges, if you want to get some good practice by crushing an old patzer like me.

I am 22 years old. I aspire to become a GM. Can I become one without taking help from any chess tutor? I will improve my game by playing as many games as I can and also solve lot of chess puzzles. My aim is to become GM by the year 2020. I am working very hard. I do not have a FIDE rating yet. My chess.com rating is less because I lose many games on time. My game is stronger than my chess.com rating. My question is- Is coaching necessary to achieve my goal or only playing with strong players is sufficient ?

Thought this was some sort of troll thread but it looks like you are very serious regarding chess....

how do you figure?

this doesn't look serious at all to me, and the op hasn't even said Any reply to serious answers to his question.

one of the marks of a troll is ignore on serious remarks (or get mad) and to engage only in vague or troll like ones.

trolls reply make the game seem funner to a guy whose main purpose is to get everyone all worked up.

another sign of the troll is all the very similar questions and obsession with something like "how to be a gm"

one thread is never entertaining enough because after awhile serious replies diminish and all the insults are played out.

in short, you guys ALL know this as we see it all the time.

IF you, Vmal are being serious- you can clearly see that this op is here mostly to troll ,and some of the people replying are trolling as well.

so I won't comment on the question. there is no point.  its clear that everyone involved knows the answer to this silly question, and that we have no risk of , unexpectantly, seeing sohum's name get the "GM" mark in the next many years.

I realised it a bit late, but you are true.

thegreat_patzer

no shame for that.

it happens to me too.  and sometimes people make big efforts to be semi-troll.

or to troll on some topics and not others.

I think u really need to hear this, even though u dont seem to get it through ur head. Man, I've been reading this whole thread and really u are embarasing urself.

1. U DONT ASK RANDOM PEOPLE IN FORUMS TO LISTEN TO UR SAD STORIES. This explains ur low social intelligence.

2. Rated 1500 live at age 22 and hoping to become GM within 3 years? Have u ever had a IQ test? Are u above 140? IF not u can forget 2000 elo within 5 years given ur rating atm.

3. How Will u afford playing chess 8 h/day? Do u have a endless amount of money?

4. When did u learn chess and since when have u been playing on weekly basis?

5. Wake TFU!!

I did not reply to all messages because I was busy today. I read all the posts just now. I thank you all for your support and concern for me. There is a ray of hope. Today I discussed this with my former chess coach. He said that I can become a GM and even a world champion if I study chess very hard. Till now I developed my game by only playing games. I have not done serious study of the game as such. My main focus was playing as many games as I can all these years. I did not study deeply. If I study, I will be a strong player. My IQ is normal because I was good in studies.

1) This is the best place to ask such questions because here there are people who breathe chess. 2) Online rating is not a real indicator of our playing strength. 3) I don't have sufficient amount of money, but I have many well wishers like you. They will help me. 4) I am playing chess since 8 years and playing regularly on this site and in club.

I dont know wether to laugh or worry about humanity. The stupidity levels were rampant with your comment #84 buddy, too hard to use some logic?

2Q1C: I think you're badly mistaken about what it takes to be a GM.

The chances of you becoming a GM are roughly the same as my chances of playing professional baseball. Basically, zero for all practical purposes. Life is practical, and even if you have the slightest chance of becoming a GM, you're what? 22? That means living in your mom's basement until you're 32, generating zero income. There's a significant possibly that your mom will get sick of it and stop taking you to chess tournaments, as soon as 6 months in. It's also possible that you will just be made to get your own place, still with zero money. Both of these end the whole thing and waste at least a year that you could use doing other wonderful things. Then if you somehow break 2200, you do a year of half-time chess coaching (becoming 33) and you still aren't in a great place - living on $16000 a year (assuming full enrollment at $20/hour) with a high school education which you slowly forget, and using up 20 hours a week to keep a roof over your head. The only thing that can improve your lot is increasing your rating. However, the chances of that happening when you started as an adult and are in your twelfth year are microscopic.

Let's not forget this: You aren't guaranteed 2200 either.

We can't assume so many things. 13-14 year old childern can become GM then why can't I ? My IQ is definitely more than them because of higher age and maturity.

blueemu

Children's brains are different from adult brains. New neural connections form much more easily in sub-adolescent brains.

... and no, age and maturity do not boost your IQ. They boost your EQ.

Ayac91

Well... U said it urself right there. 14 years of practice allready.... And what do u think Will magically happen within The next 3 years? Im sorry for beeing this hard on you but i actually think this is the only way for u to understand. Over and out.

Cherub_Enjel

If you've been playing chess for 8 years, I'm not sure if that's good or not!

I would think you would be an FM at least after 8 years, because then it means you might be able to be a GM. Maybe chess just isn't the thing for you, I'm sorry to say that!

But still, I think you should focus on what I said, which is go up step by step. You can't be 2500 without being 1600 first, so try for 1600 first!

Ayac91

Im good att studies so my IQ is normal?? What??

BronsteinPawn

They threw you out of college, you are already 22, and you are thinking of somehow studying chess for 3 straight years?

Are you a vegetable or something? Where is your brain.

BronsteinPawn

This better be a trolling thread.

Lol

do you have a coach thas promised you the possibility of WCC? wow.  what an extraordinary guy!  you should totally publicize his  name - he seems very motivational!

mine has only claimed that after a heck of alot of work I will surely advance.  he made no promises about my ultimate destination.

do you think he is a little pessimistic with me? or perhaps you are just unusually high in IQ?? idk.

I will think (and be anxious) about it.  sincerely a patzer....

thegreat_patzer

ah mikey  we never let "inane" drivel distract us.

sides' these guys figure once they get good at chess they will go to the tourneys and kick but.
