So what you're saying is, you'd tolerate us better if we were more unlikable tongue.png

Real life hippie told me (he's in his 70s-80s now) that:

"I used to scream 'make love not war' with all the hate in my heart"

fixed for you, poor grammar/punctuation is intolerable thumbup.png

The punctuation was correct! You were doubtless thinking of "tolerance," the genuine emotion. But he was talking about "Tolerance," a cult of phony civility and hypocritical "courtesy."

There are warts to be sure, still, love and peace are respectable ideals. Sometimes I wonder what sort of ideals drive people like... well, we can't talk politics here can we.

So do nihilists, which isn't entirely unreasonable, and at least they aren't malicious... unlike some.

I learned the game of chess at 19 years old and have since played for 2 years. I have increased my rating in 3minute blitz from 600 to 1800 and 10 minute from 600 to over 2100 on lichess. Is it possible that i, or anybody for that matter could earn a title after starting so late. I've heard it's quite improbbable if not near impossible to become a grandmaster so late, but how about a FIDE master, or an international master? I'd love to see some informative stuff. Thanks!

yes, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. if nobody has done it before, you will break records by becoming the first. if someone has done it before, then yes, it is possible.

ghost_of_pushwood, play notshadey in a game of chess. That should help you evaluate how close he is to master level.

Correct. He just needs to play Fritz 5 (free engine) if he isn't mated by move 40, he got potential.

I think one can be honest without being snide.

If they can't take the snideness, they will never be tough enough to get good at chess.

In addition to which, I get rather tired of hearing Tolerant People telling me that I can't do (or say) stuff.

You can do or say whatever you want, but my question was completely innocuous, i understand there's a serious number of weird people constantly asking if they can become a GM, which i don't aspire to. I just hadn't heard much about the difficulty of getting to other titles. But thankfully a lot of people have given me plenty of information and i appreciate that. You aren't one of them and you have probably the most information on it as you are a titled player. So it's weird, but free speech etc. Keep being snide bud  hope you enjoy it

Scanning the topic briefly I don't see anyone giving you much.

In reply to your OP, first of all, I don't believe you learned the rules 2 years ago... but lots of people use the phrase "began chess" to mean different things. Maybe you started taking it seriously 2 years ago. Ok, that's fine.

To answer your question, yes, you can get a title starting as late as that, especially the lower ones (NM, CM, FM). Even GM is not impossible... but "it's not impossible" is a pretty low threshold.

How much work does it take? Just like how people mean different things when they say "I began chess" people have very different impressions of what work is. If you love chess, then maybe you will study and play for 8 hours a day, every day, and 10 years later say "I never really worked on chess." GMs have said such things. So it depends, but most people reach very close to their peak after 8-10 years.

Part of the problem is age makes people play worse. Pros peak around 30. Us amateurs aren't as affected, but I mention it to point out that some who say "I'll study for 30 years" misunderstand. Chess is not a game you can win with knowledge alone, otherwise people like Kramnik and Anand would have been world #1 and #2 for the last 15 years. Chess is a performance game. When you play a difficult tournament OTB, you're playing for hours at a time, and have to fight while taking into account your energy and emotions. One tournament I played in we had 3 rounds that day. Round 1 started at 9AM and my last game finished at midnight.

The above quote, for example.

I'd guess more than half of the posts here are trolling, sarcastic, or otherwise silly.
