Is it possible to get MUCH better at blitz?

Since 2008 my USCF rating has improved from the 1400's to over 2000 (high of 2078, 2026 now) but I still suck at blitz & even G-30's & G-60's heavily stress me out.  Over at ChessTempo I have a tactics rating of 2200 but can barely keep my blitz tactics rating over 1700.

I think I just don't have that mental "fast-twitch" chess gene (to make a runner's analogy).  I was in Union Square in NYC tonight playing a for a few bucks a game with a guy that I'm sure I'd beat in a long tournament game probably 8 of 10 games or more but was playing so sloppy in 5 min.

Maybe I should just quit trying & be happy to be a decent tournament player, I notice even a few NM's here on chess.com have blitz ratings of only 1700 or so so maybe I should just focus on playing solid slow chess but blitz chess is so cool. Cool

Thoughts?

My rating blows and I quit playing tournaments after the 6th grade so take this with a grain of salt...but this is my personal experience with chess.

I never studied chess but I would routinely be the only person from my elementary school chess club (this was a random public school and I still have no idea why we had a good team) to bring home any hardware from nationals because I would place in blitz. I guess I probably would've been "much better" if I bothered to learn openings; E4 FTW.

I would normally go 4/5 at pretty much every tournament but I seemed to have a significant edge at blitz despite my lack of knowledge of the game.

I doubt I answered any of your questions but I can say with confidence that the energy I put into learning chess probably shouldn't have produced the results I had...though that was sort of the case for non-blitz games...

Thinking back on it I feel like I was exceptional at understanding my opponent's psychological state and playing off of their weaknesses...

What do you want?
Do you want to get a higher USCF rating?
Do you want a higher chess.com rating? If both, which is most important?

Blitz games are really fun ; slower chess is intense - perhaps playing by your mood would maximize your chances? Smile

ancor3's quotes about all that are kinda funny too Tongue Out

U can get blitz up to 2200s easily here if you are anywhere near FM in tournament chess. that's imho.
