- you are absolutely correct, but the marginal cases are inherently unpredictable. If you lose 2 or three games that you had a 99% chance of winning you’ll also be punished more than you “should” be.

So if 100 players tried to game the system, a few of them, strictly by chance, will overperform and claim “see! It works!” Others will underperform and say “this is BS!” For most, they’ll just do more or less as expected.
