800 to 850 is going to be hard enough, woodshover. You're getting WAY ahead of yourself!
Is it realistic?

Becoming a master takes talent. It's not something anyone can count on. It would be like saying, "I can run a mile in 7 minutes, so in three years I'll be able to run a mile in 3:50."
Improvement in running may be easier, because every master I've met started playing when they were very young. Just as an example, for a 36 year old novice such as youself, it would be nearly impossible. I include myself in that group.

Woodshover if you posted at 2:30 AM on a Sunday morning what do you think the chances are that trysts would be johnny-on-the-spot with a response?
I think she kinda likes you. Now that's gotta beat being an FM.

Well if you cut out sleeping, eating, forums and buy tons of chess books and a couple of chess computers, and then just live and breathe chess 24/7 for three years, I'd say... who knows?

Good God man, you should have known I wasn't talking about myself!!!!!! I was talking about somebody else on here rated 1500 who said it. I know I'm getting nowhere. I don't even plan on ever playing in tournaments! I just thought he had no common sense what so ever, and somebody should tell him so ever, to have said something like that.

lol u mad?

I notice that 4 of his last 5 games were lost without him even making a single move. Didn't Fischer do that against Spassky some years back?

To plan on going from a rating of 1500 to FM in three years? Personally, I don't think so.
With today's resources, it IS realistic for a 1500 player to reach master level in 5 years.
Requirements:
1. 100% chess study and training as a career
2. Grandmaster/IM coach
3. Chess Informant, essential print and video materials
4. Chess computer, databases and engine
5. international tournamant participation

Three years is a long time. If he dedicated enough time to practicing, studying, playing very skilled players and whatnot, I can see someone who has a decent amount of talent becoming a FM. I've seen FMs on this site with ratings under 1800, so that'd be about a 300 point increase in 3 years?

1500 to "expert" in 3 years seems more reasonable, and even that would be no easy thing. FM's are damn strong, I doubt that most chess players would get there even after 20 years.
Actualy, I agree. I was just wondering why somebody rated at 1500 would be silly enough to believe that, when even I, with no chess experience to speak of, realizes how stupid the idea is.
