Is it worth to upgrade to Fritz 16?

Hello Everyone,

I currently have Fritz 15 and I am reasonably happy with it. I have looked at Fritz 16 and failed to justify upgrade.

For now my feeling is that Big Database for my Fritz would be money better spent.

Do anyone have any experiences with such upgrade and would be willing to share?

Oh I am amateur player.

Kind Regards

I have 16. I have Chessbase. My opinion is that there are some nice upgrades in 16 for some people. For example they have assisted analysis. I actually intentionally turn this off most of the time. It really depends how much use you think you would get out of the things that changed.

As for whether the money would be better spent on the big database, maybe. If you play a lot of correspondence chess, I would say the money for the big database is well spent. If you want to look at particular games, the database that comes with Fritz is spotty. For example, the database with Fritz 16 is missing a lot of important Fischer games.

As for Stockfish, I have and use it. I have a number of other engines as well. What I like about the Fritz 16 engine is it dumbs down in a way that I like compared to some of these other engines.

just how effective are these programs? If you spend say 1 or 2 hours per evening on loose chess play. I know this will come across as a dumb question, and i am also an amateur player. but I find there are a lot of resources online and from books. Just saying.

I guess I can look in to them, but I'm sure there are others who question spending money, where money is hard to find, for any other purpose than enjoying to learn. For example, learn one new opening per month and stick to that, follow those games on it, and resource the chess encyclopaedia among other books. S1 Editrice for example.

But then for those with some extra cash, I really have no idea about that. But yea I misunderstood RainCoatLandSpy's question. I'm glad there are some advisors here. I would also like to improve my game faster than my current pace.

The Fritz 16 interface is beyond pathetic. It follows this growing trend of over-simplifying the interface at the expense of features. After hours, I still cannot figure out how to force Fritz 16 to play a specific opening against me. I have tanked more hours into trying to figure out Fritz 16 than I have studying chess. Total waste.

I have Fritz 15, and I have Fritz 16. The difference between the two is so minor that in my opinion is is NOT worth the upgrade. Stick with Fritz 15 and save your money.

Fritz 16 has been around for 1½ years, does anyone know when fritz 17 is available for purchase?

People who keep chanting "Use Stockfish!" are completely missing the point. Fritz is a user interface that supports many engines. You can use stockfish with Fritz 13, or you can use it with Fritz 16. The OP's question was whether or not it was worth updating to Fritz 16 because of all the new user features. Simply repeating "Use Stockfish" does nothing to help

I have Fritz 14 and 16. I like Fritz 16 interface because I play against the Grandmaster level after setting up specific lines. I like that so I won't have to setup a specific time control.  As far as if Fritz 16 is worth the money, it all depends on how you want to use it.  As far as new features, the benefits between 14 and 16 isn't that much but I upgraded because I am a computer nerd and a chess nerd.  As far as databases, I suggest no one purchase database games. You can go to chess ok.com and download games for free  of the weekly games as well as go to This Week in Chess (Yes, the 10+ years old site) and download games. The beauty of TWIC games is that they are all with strong Masters and Grandmaster.  If you want to create a decent repertoire, I think you need to study Master and Grandmaster games. Fritz Big Database has games of players of all levels and can distort your repertoire.  But that is just me talking.. :-)  I hope that this helps

So komodo13 gets the fritz UI for free? or do we need to buy fritz to get the UI?

Umm still confuse about komodo13 vs fritz16. Is there anyone can explain?

Fritz 17 is out now (and with a good discount for  the next few hours) I am actually tempted to buy, even if I already have version 16: the new fat fritz engine and some of the additional features look quite good. i don't care about ray tracing, though: I am buying Fritz, not Cyberpunk 2077 (that will come in April! tongue.png )

Komodo is the underlying engine that uses the Fritz 16 interface. If you have Fritz and want Komodo (engine) also, you might go to the Komodo web site and just buy the engine and have both.
