Simul chicken is quite tasty, especially if you use leeks.

I noticed on Garry Kasparov's website that it says if your rating has ever been over 2000 he will not play you in a simul, no exceptions. Man is this guy afraid to lose or what? I am disheartened by this because he was a chess hero of mine and I had always hoped to play in one of those simuls he gives from time to time. This reminds me of Andy Kaufman who to assure victory would only wrestle women. Is there a precedent for this or is Garry just being a wussy?

Sounds to me like you are just a dick.

This is taken for Gary Kasparov's site under Simul, it is not that he is to chicken to play over 2000 players just that he would need a greater time limit and you would need more dollars :)

"Events have a maximum of 20 "players" and as many people as the sponsor/organizer wishes attending dinner. Some sponsors just serve cocktails and hors' d'oeuvres during play. The format of the evening is up to the sponsor.

Players must be true amateurs who have 1999 ELO points or less, no exceptions. No player who has ever held a Rating of 2000 or over is permitted--it is contrary to the spirit of the simul and to the agreement. No coaching or computer assistance is permitted.

If the sponsor/organizer requires serious players who want a serious match, this is a different sort of evening with four to five hours scheduled and is a very different event."

Kasparov has carved his own place in history and has no need to explain his practices to we patzers.

I didn't know that Kasparov has this policy.

I went to Kasparov's website. He argues that only "true amateurs" will be allowed to participate in these simuls. The simuls are open to the general public.

This suggests that he may be open to negotiation to play semi-professional players in a separate simul, perhaps as a fundraiser or an advertisement. I can understand him not wanting to be ambushed by some 2500 FIDE player in simul of 100 players, so perhaps this is his way of protecting himself and the integrity of the event.

He has played +2000 rated opponents in simuls in the last few years, but they are in special circumstances such a special youth simul.

Fezzik, please tell me, if you have the time, what the hell is a true amateur??

Please tell me what semi-professional chess is?? Please stop creating new expressions.

You say---" I can understand him not wanting to be ambushed by some 2500 FIDE player in simul of 100 players...."

A 2500 player would know the etiquette of not taking a board at a simul. A 2500 player knows there is nothing to gain by beating Kasparov in a 50 board simul. There is nobody to tell who wouldn't laugh at him.

What serious fighter is going to fight someone who has one arm tied behind his back. It just isnt done---its not proper etiquette.

However if you are a 2200 or 2300 player who will never get a chance to play a Fischer or a Kasparov---then I think it would be acceptable to take a board. Although their bragging rights would be greatly diminished.

Thirty years from now when you are talking to your grandkids---you can say hey, I beat the great Fischer! You dont have to tell them it was a simul.

Fezzik, admit the mans a chicken. he was a chicken yesterday, he is a chicken today and he will be a chicken tomorrow. Mister you're gonna have to learn to tell it the way it is. The man restricts his simuls to guys like you and me---WHAT A PUSSY-----cat.

Sad thing is that this obvious fact still has to be spelled out. Common sense is not so common.

But hey, Raul72, if Kaspy doesn't smash those patzers in arranged simuls he won't have anything else to tell his grandchildren, amirite?

Ok, I was thinking of prohibiting anyone that has ever been rated over 1300. Your thoughts?

KyleMayhugh

Go for it. It's your simul, do whatever you want.

Indeed. His place as one of the best( if not the best) chess players of all time is undisputed by anyone who's into chess, from amateur to Super GM. Given this, why would he care if a few CM and NMs on an internet forum think he's cowardly. He doesn't need to prove his bravery to anyone; playing 8...d5 in the 16th game of  the Karpov-Kasparov WCC game 1985 is all the proof anyone ever needed.

Spoken as someone who honestly believes that the only difference between a 1200 rated player and Topalov is the amount of time it takes for them to find the right move.

It takes courage to play as aggressively as these players do when so much is on the line. "Nerves" is probably fine too, but yes, courage, "bravery" and other synonyms are indeed the right words.

I make the same moves as Topolov, I just make them all at the wrong time.

It's noteworthy that Kasparov played in a simul that Karpov was giving when Kasparov was a Candidate Master. Had Karpov adopted such a policy Kasparov could never have played in it.

As has been said many times already in this thread Kasparov has played lots of simuls against strong GMs like Movsesian and Sutovsky, before retiring. A 12-year-old Kasparov isn't a much more difficult simul opponent. In any case I don't really care about simuls regardless of the player or opposition, if Kasparov is a simul chicken he can be allowed to be that as far as I'm concerned.

@ gbidari

I'm curious, why do you have such a bee in your bonnet about Kasparov's simultaneous-display practices? did you miss out on a game?

ivandh

That's what I'm thinking, this fellow is cheesed because he doesn't get to play.

Baldr

If you are a top player and you want a game with The Legend, I'm sure he would be willing to work something out.  But in that case, he shouldn't have to be playing against 19 other people at the same time.

The guy calling him Chicken isn't asking for a fair fight, he's asking for Kasparov to play with a handicap.

If gbidari wants to bet $2500,000 and play one-on-one, I'm sure he'll get a game. But I don't think that's what he wants.  He wants to play for free, while Kasparov has 20 games going against master level players.

Funny how he wants the game stacked in his favor while he's screaming 'Chicken!'.
